Start the Year with Academic Writing Life Hacks

A new academic year is the right time to start planning one’s international projects and publications. The HSE Academic Writing Centre invites researchers, faculty members, and postgraduate students to the AWC Welcome Day on September 23–24. This is a traditional event to start the year where the participants can get to know the AWC team and find out more about its programme for the autumn semester.
The HSE Academic Writing Centre has been assisting academics in their publication activities for 15 years. The Centre provides linguistic support to HSE faculty and helps them develop their writing skills to get published in high-ranking scientific journals. The AWC offers courses and workshops on research writing and international communication as well as individual consultations to work on their text. If a colleague is from another university, they can also benefit from the online library of useful resources (including AI tools for teaching and research) or attend AWC workshops that are open to everyone.
During two days, speakers from HSE University, who are experts in different fields, will run five online workshops on various topics related to international science communication and research writing. Each workshop will be held twice, so participants can attend one or more workshops—or all of them.
What’s on the Agenda this Year?
Daniil Osipov
The AWC has been developing courses on AI use in research since 2023 and has gained extensive expertise in this sphere. This time the speaker will address the issue of AI translation. Participants can join the workshop ‘Pro AI-assisted translation: Prompts for effective cross-language adaptation’ to pick up strategies for optimising their workflow with AI translation tools and receive ready-to-use prompt templates.
Speaker: Daniil Osipov, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor at the School of Foreign Languages, Faculty of Humanities, HSE University
Arsenii Buchatskii
Another topic researchers are interested in is cross-cultural communication. At the workshop ‘Turning East: Efficient communication with scholars from Asia’ participants will learn which familiar norms of communication are considered to be inappropriate when dealing with colleagues from Asia. Attendees will leave the workshop with a checklist for effective correspondence with Eastern partners.
Speaker: Arsenii Buchatskii, a visiting lecturer at the School of Foreign Languages and the Faculty of Social Sciences at HSE University
Natalia Kolchugina
At the workshop ‘Champions of writing: What do sports and academic writing have in common?’ the speaker will look at practices that lead to success in both sport and research writing. The strategies, practical recommendations, and tips will be easily applicable and useful both for experienced and early-career research writers.
Speaker: Natalia Kolchugina, PhD in Linguistics, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the HSE University Research and Education Laboratory for Linguistic Conflict Studies and Modern Communicative Practices, a translator and interpreter
Anastasiia Piatachkova
Are you planning to apply for an international internship? Then you may need to hear from a colleague whose application was successful and resulted in receiving a mobility grant. The workshop ‘Become the internship winner’ will provide participants with some insights into the application and selection process and an action plan.
Speaker: Anastasiia Piatachkova, Deputy Head of the Asia-Pacific Sector at the Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies, Senior Lecturer at the Department of International Relations at the HSE University
Maria Nikitina
Do academics wish for their academic institution or programme to be visible online? At the workshop ‘Writing for an academic website: Let the department shine’ the speaker will share effective strategies for promoting their department or project with an engaging and easily accessible academic website.
Speaker: Maria Nikitina, translator, the Chief Editor of the HSE University English-language website
The event is open to members of the HSE community, as well as anyone interested. Learn more and register for the AWC Welcome Day.
