Voronovo Student Center Gains New Sports Ground Funded by HSE Endowment
On October 18, the opening ceremony for a new sports ground took place at HSE's Voronovo Student Center. The sports ground was fully funded by the HSE Endowment, and is the first project delivered on endowment funds.
The designs started out with a student competition in the HSE Art & Design School to identify locations for future sports facilities and other sites at Voronovo. The compeitition identified the optimal location for a multifunction sports facility and in early June HSE's Vice Rector Vladimir Samoylenko took part in the ceremony to launch construction at the site.
'In future, all donors to HSE's targeted capital fund will be involved in selecting projects for endowment funding,' Samoylenko said during the opening ceremony. 'This aims to ensure maximum transparency and openness in the Fund's work. This year, the Fund was opened to all interested in becoming part of the Donor's Club. And even the smallest donation makes a different.'
'My first time in Voronovo I thought how great it would be not only to work, but rest and relax here,' Polina Klenova-Lenskaya, 3rd year Culture Studies Student and editor-in-chief of The Вышка (student magazine The Vyshka) said. You can walk in the forests, in winter – you can go skiing, and in summer – swimming in the lake. And the sports ground that opened while we were at Voronovo works all year round. In winter you can ice skate, and the rest of the time, play basketball, volleyball, and even tennis.' The endowment's goal is to build and expand its capital, using its income to develop education and research provision at the university. Until recently, the Fund only worked with major donors, but in summer 2015 a public campaign for donations was launched. In just one month, HSE graduates donated over 1 million roubles to the endowment fund.

On April 26, the HSE Academic Council approved a charter for the creation of a Board of Trustees at the Faculty of Computer Science. Board members include senior executives from Yandex, JetBrains, SAS, 1C, and Sberbank. The endowment will be used by the faculty to fund long-term projects.
This year VTB is launching the Endowment for Comparative Social Research at HSE. The endowment will make it possible to invest 10-20 million roubles in research each year. The exact amount will depend on trust management of the endowment assets, implemented by VTB Capital Investment Management.
