International Partners Week at HSE St. Petersburg Gathers Partners and Friends
Dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the HSE St. Petersburg campus, the recent International Partners Week welcomed 65 colleagues and friends from 43 institutions across Europe and Asia, reflecting the inspiring international ecosystem that HSE seeks to develop in St. Petersburg. Against the backdrop of wonderful St. Petersburg weather, the event incorporated thoughtful discussions on common issues and challenges in global higher education, best practices in managing internationalization, current trends and policies related to Russia’s higher education development, and cooperation agreements.
The week also included visits to various HSE venues, including student accommodations, as well as a networking and cultural programme. In addition, on May 15, a student fair took place showcasing the university’s partners to approximately 150 HSE students. The Quantitative Techniques for Economics and Management (QTEM) Consortium contributed to the International Partners Week by offering an additional info-session and training for HSE faculty and students.
Several important agreements were signed during International Partners Week. Agreements on two double degree programmes in International Studies and Business & Management were signed with the University Rome Tor Vergata, bringing cooperation between the two institutions to a new level. Agreements on student and faculty exchange in History, Business, Management & Economics deepen ties between HSE St. Petersburg and the University of Turin. Finally, an exchange agreement between LUISS Business School and the HSE St. Petersburg School of Economics and Management will further strengthen the partnership profile at the school level.
The closing highlight of International Partners Week was a keynote speech by Edwin van Rest, Founder and Chief Opportunities Officer of StudyPortals. In his ‘Talk digital to me!’ speech, van Rest focused on emerging trends and provided several creative insights for the era of digital internationalization, which is characterized by growing demand for online and distance learning.
Edmond W.H. Lee, a full professor at the Department of Mathematics, Nova Southeastern University, USA, has recently defended his Doctor of Sciences (DSc) thesis at the Dissertation Council in Mathematics, HSE University. The DSc in Russia is a higher doctoral degree that can be earned after the PhD. Professor Lee’s defence was held over Zoom, with the candidate and his dissertation committee members participating remotely from 5 cities in Brazil, Israel, Russia, and the USA. Lee became the first international recipient of a DSc degree in Mathematics from HSE University.
How can we achieve balanced growth of the global economy? What is a human-centred approach for economic growth? How can we measure the contribution of corporations to sustainable development? On December 1- 2, visionaries of sustainable development — more than 50 international experts from 23 countries, including representatives of government organizations and businesses, non-profit organizations, and civil society activists — will answer these questions at the Global Impact Conference.
Jointly organized by HSE University and Coursera, the international eLearning Stakeholders and Researchers Summit (eSTARS 2020) will be held from December 1 – 2, 2020. It will be the third time the organizers bring together international stakeholders from governments, the academic community, busines, as well as researchers and experts to discuss the present and future of online education.
What lies at the core of the European integration? What motto keeps Europe alive? Has European model become outdated and is it capable of adapting to the changing reality? These and other questions were the focus of the online talk delivered by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Russian Federation Géza Andreas von Geyr at the invitation of HSE University. The lecture was attended by students, scholars, and members of the press from around the world.
Leaders of Russia and the People's Republic of China Discuss the BRICS Energy Research Cooperation Platform Created with the Participation of HSE University
At the twelfth BRICS summit held on November 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin and President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping spoke via videoconference about the importance of the BRICS Energy Research Cooperation Platform. Researchers from HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge and the Institute for Economics and Regulation of Natural Monopolies are involved in the work of the Platform.
This October, the Doctoral School of Arts and Design, together with HSE Art and Design School and Goldsmiths College, launched a new project. The Performance Artistic Research Laboratory (PeARL) brings together artists and scholars of various fields to collaborate in studies and experiments to develop ‘Practice as Research’ (PaR).
What is the place and role of the European Union in the modern world? How is the European integration project developing, and what role does Germany play in it? How are relations between the EU and Russia today? You will learn the answers to these and many other questions during the lecture.
Thanks to a recently launched programme for visiting scholars, HSE University will host a large number of international scholars and scientists who will teach or conduct research at HSE. In the 2020/21 academic year, about a hundred colleagues from foreign universities will work remotely at HSE under civil law contracts. HSE First Vice Rector Vadim Radaev told the HSE News Service about the new programme.
HSE University’s Faculty of World Economy and International Affairshosted a series of events dedicated to the 30th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and the Republic of Korea. During the week, an international conference was held, followed by a presentation of the new Master’s programme ‘Economics, Politics and Business in Asia’, as well as a student Korean-language Olympiad.
From November 9 – 13, the HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge is organizing its Tenth International Academic Conference ‘Foresight and STI Policy’. The conference has been acknowledged by OECD as one of the world’s most important forums of foresight researchers. It will the tenth time that the conference brings together Russian and international experts from the leading think tanks, research centres and universities, national ministries and government bodies, development institutes and high-tech companies from over 20 countries.
