On May 15-16, 2020, Telling Stories, a communications, media, and design festival that is dedicated to ideas, innovations, and modern technology in the creative industry, will be held online. The HSE Faculty of Communications, Media, and Design is the festival organizer, and the speakers include film directors Paul W.S. Anderson and Vadim Perelman.

The festival programme features public talks, workshops, open seminars, films, audio shows, live performances, a fashion show by fashion students of the HSE Art and Design School, sound design projects, as well as performances by musicians and DJs. ‘Storytelling is becoming one of the key components of the creative industry today,’ said Tatiana Rivchun, Deputy Dean of the HSE Faculty of Communications, Media, and Design, ‘Telling Stories is a stage where we and our friends not only tell their stories, but help others make interesting stories for themselves and the audience, and to convey them in the form of dance, song, and so on. Headliners and participants of our online festivals will talk about the specifics of telling stories by using different media forms, in the language of animation, cinema, and photography.’

Speakers at Telling Stories-2020 include:

Paul William Scott Anderson, British film director, writer, and producer: Resident Evil, Alien vs. Predator, Pompeii

Vadim Perelman, film director, writer, and producer: House of Sand and Fog, Buy Me, Yolki 5, Izmeny, Pepel

Valerie Fahnestock Steele, American fashion historian, curator, and director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology

Paul W.S. Anderson and Vadim Perelman have never participated in online festivals before. For them, it will be a new professional challenge, which evolved in the trend of the global transition to online space. According to Paul W.S. Anderson, Telling Stories is a great event that provides an opportunity for fruitful dialogue about the trends and future of the creative industry development. ‘For me, this is a good opportunity to share my experience with the Russian audience, which is interested in developing the film industry in their country. Cinema is uniting and relevant for everyone, independently of their nationality.’

Vadim Perelman will show the director’s cut of his House of Sand and Fog at the festival for the first time. ‘Digitalization and modern technology are making a dramatic change in the world of cinema and other arts,’ he believes. ‘As part of the live broadcast, it will be interesting to see the participants’ attitude to contemporary cinema and discuss the relevant social transformations. I hope that this discussion will be useful both for the Telling Stories festival participants and for myself.’

The main topic of Telling Stories-2020 is ‘New Norm/New Reality’. What is normal and common today? How is this impacted by opinion leaders, from analysts to influencers? How do we find a balance between full communicational freedom and information security? What will happen to digital art and how will the world of cinemas and museums change? How does cinema model our internal fears? And finally, how should we tell stories today? These and many other questions will be discussed at the Telling Stories-2020 festival.
