This year’s HSE University Competition for Faculty Positions has now begun at the university’s campuses in Moscow, St Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, and Perm. Applicants to the competition must select their preferred career trajectory (Academic, Teaching and Methodological, or Professional) and provide supporting information in the competition form.

The application deadline is 12:00 on November 21. The competition offers 496 vacancies: 349 in Moscow, 120 in St Petersburg, 5 in Nizhny Novgorod, and 22 in Perm.

A total of 720 applications were received for the previous summer competition, including 438 in Moscow, 181 in St Petersburg, 45 in Nizhny Novgorod, and 56 in Perm. Out of these, 611 were selected (369, 141, 45, and 56 for the above campuses respectively).

The selection process for the winter competition of the 2022/23 academic year consists of several stages. First, applicants must collect and submit the competition documents. Then, the Review and Selection Committees (of which there are 33 in total) will decide which applications will continue to the next stage. Those that are accepted will undergo expert review (including interviews and personal presentations when required).

More information about these stages is available on the competition website. The site also has information on the required application documents and the selection criteria. The registration period for the competition lasts more than a month—giving applicants enough time to collect and submit the documents required to prove that they are not restricted from engaging in teaching activities.

The application forms can be found by clicking ‘Apply for the Competition’ on the competition website. Applicants’ competition forms must correspond to their employment status. The three categories are: ‘I am a teacher at HSE’, ‘I work at HSE under an employment contract, but am not a teacher or I work on GPA terms’, and ‘I am an external participant’. All participants must complete their applications through their MyHSE Services Account, which university staff members can access using their corporate username and password. External participants must register for a MyHSE Services Account, after which a password will be sent to the email address provided.

When filling in their competition form, each applicant must select a suitable professional/career trajectory that matches their expectations of professional development at HSE University. Applicants can choose their first and second preferences. The three available trajectories are Academic, Teaching and Methodological, and Professional.

The institutionalisation of these trajectories was conceived by the university’s Academic Council in 2020. The ‘Academic’ trajectory is aimed at employees who have previously engaged in publishing activities, while the ‘Teaching and Methodological’ one relates to experience of methodological (project) work with students and support of academic courses (including online courses). Applicants who choose the ‘Professional’ trajectory will be assessed based on their practical experiences and achievements in applied fields.

Applicants’ choice of preferred career trajectory should be confirmed by the information and content provided in their application. The application now includes information on the completion of teaching courses—this is important regardless of the chosen trajectory. Those who have not taken such courses as part of continuing professional development can start with the online self-study course Modern Approaches in Teaching and Education (in Russian). Other opportunities are also available as part of the Teach for HSE project. The Teach for HSE brochure is available to download here (in Russian).

Applicants who have signed an Electronic Communications Agreement (possible only at the Moscow campus) can sign their application electronically with a simple digital signature. Those who have not signed such an agreement must submit their original application to the Front Office (Moscow) or to the academic secretary or by post (in other campuses). Corresponding instructions can be found in the application form.

The results of the competition will be announced on February 9, 2023 by the academic councils of each campus (recommendation of professors, election of assistants, lecturers, senior lecturers, associate professors), and on March 1, 2023 by the HSE University Academic Council (voting for participants from Moscow and professors from other campuses.)

Candidates can track the status of their application in their personal account.

The renewal, extension, signing and termination of contracts in the university’s campuses will take place from February 10 to April 1, and from March 22 to April 1 in Moscow.
