‘Light and Air’ Exhibition of HSE Art and Design School Opens at Arkhangelskoye Museum
On May 17, the ‘Light and Air’ group exhibition project was opened by students of the HSE Art and Design School at the Arkhangelskoye Museum Estate. The exhibits created by the university’s contemporary artists in training reflect on how people are connected with nature. The exhibition is open until July 9.
The Arkhangelskoye Estate was built at the end of the 18th century for the Yusupov family. Now it is one of the largest estate museums in Russia. ‘We agreed with the director of this space to muse on the topic of what the descendants of the Yusupovs would include in their collection if they lived here today. We are sure that they would continue to collect art, namely contemporary art,’ says Pierre-Christian Brochet, project commissioner and curator of Contemporary Art at the HSE Art and Design School.
Olga Nestertseva, Deputy General Director for Exhibitions, Research and Education at Arkhangelskoye, noted that the HSE Art and Design School was very enthusiastic about the proposal to create a joint project in the format of a dialogue between classical and contemporary art. ‘The students are creating contemporary art imbued with the possibilities of our museum, getting acquainted with monuments, collections, our territory and landscapes. They create new works that will be as valuable in 300 years as the collection that the Yusupovs assembled,’ she says.
Pierre-Christian Brochet also commented that HSE University’s cooperation with the Arkhangelskoye Museum Estate would not end with the ‘Light and Air’ project. Plans are underway to host another exhibition of the HSE Art and Design School this year and two more next year.
The theme of the project, as well as the name ‘Light and Air’, arose from thinking about how people are connected with nature. ‘We understand that light is something that absolutely does not depend on us,’ said Pierre-Christian Brochet. ‘With light, we are able to see. Air allows us to experience two elements: sound and smell. Therefore, the exhibition presents works in which there is a certain dialogue. Here we have some exhibits from the Arkhangelskoye foundation and works by HSE University students; all of them are connected with nature, with light and sound.’
‘We all worked collectively to create the concept,’ explains Anastasia Shabashova, curator of the Light and Air exhibition, third-year student of HSE University’s Mentor-Researcher educational programme. ‘This is the first joint project between the HSE Art and Design School and the Arkhangelskoye Estate. To me, this project is unique, because this is the first time that I’ve worked in a group of mentors in a large team. It is definitely a good experience.’
The exposition includes works by students of various majors at the HSE Art and Design School: Contemporary Art, Screen Arts, Animation and Illustration, Photography, Fashion, Game Design, Sound Art and Sound Design.
Lyubov Vishnevskaya, fourth-year student of the Design programme, presented a work named ‘Windows’. ‘At the height of the pandemic, I was staying at home, and an idea came to me. I took a screenshot from Google Maps of the famous hill that is on the Windows splash screen. Everyone knows this picture, but when you photograph this hill and find its representation in real space, it loses its recognition,’ says the artist. ‘I transferred this photo to the curtains; my idea was to merge two worlds—the world that is on the curtains and the world that is behind them.’
Daria Kalinina, third-year student of the Contemporary Photography programme, presented a series of photographs of Moscow buildings as part of the exhibition. ‘My first impression of them was that they were some kind of pile-up of objects, probably because I didn’t like them. I started shooting them and I had to get used to them somehow, but they turned out to be quite sunny, pleasant and interesting in the photos. Thanks to this project, I was able if not to fall in love with such architecture, then at least to come to terms with the fact that it also has a place to be,’ said Daria Kalinina.
The ‘Light and Air’ exhibition is open until July 9.
