Urban Projects: From Ideas to Implementation
This summer, the HSE Perm Faculty of Management organized its first international summer school on urban projects. The summer school 'Urban Projects: From Ideas to Implementation' focused on designing a campus park. Irina Shafranskaya, Deputy Dean of the HSE Perm Faculty of Management, shared her impressions of the summer school.
— What criteria did you use to select a site for urban development, and who was involved?
— A park outside one of the HSE's buildings caught our attention. It was in poor condition, but once redesigned, it could become the crown jewel of our city. So the summer school participants worked on the park's new design under the guidance of highly experienced tutors, lecturers, and experts.
The lecturers — Kasper Pobloski, professor at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan; Sergey Khromov-Borisov, partner at SenseCraft; and architect Maciej Czeredys—explained the essential theory underlying this type of urban development project. Each lecturer contributed his relevant expertise in urban planning, architecture, management, and marketing.
The tutors were an international team of young people, trained in urban development, from Singapore, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Poland, and the U.K., as well as HSE graduates. They helped the participating teams develop their projects.
And finally, experts Sergey Malenko and Dmitry Lapshin, representing the city and regional governments, explained how new urban projects may be supported by the state and municipal authorities.
— Who attended the summer school and what were their impressions?
— We were quite happy with the kinds of participants we had. They included our bachelor’s students and alumni, students from other of our city’s universities (eg from the Urals Branch of the Academy of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture), and also students from Moscow State University, the HSE in Moscow, and international guests from Sweden and Bulgaria. The entire course was delivered in English. Our initial concern was that it might be a barrier to communication and collaboration, but, in fact, the participants spoke English throughout the seven days, only occasionally switching to Russian, and I find the language practice to be a valuable by-product of our course. Later, the students shared about their experience in social networks, and it was my impression that everyone felt happy and inspired. We are now thinking of holding another summer school in 2014.

The new Zaryadye Park in Moscow has inspired a series of studies and seminars involving urbanists, cultural scientists, designers, anthropologists and geographers. Master’s programme in Prototyping Future Cities offered by the HSE Vysokovsky Graduate School of Urbanism was launched in 2017 and has since become quite popular among international students. Students from all over the world come to Moscow to learn how to use technologies to deal with future challenges of urban development. Two of the first-year students have talked to HSE News Service about studying on the programme and the projects they have been working on.
Benito Juarez, the founder of the first Fab Lab in South America and the Latin America Fab Lab Network, has come to HSE University for the 2018 autumn semester as an invited lecturer on Master’s Programme in Prototyping Future Cities. He is delivering a course in Impact Analysis for first-year students and leading the City Project module, a practical component of the Master’s programme. Mr Juarez has talked to HSE News Service about fab lab projects, creative cities of the future, and the courses he is teaching at HSE.
A contemporary city expands; it is stitched together with communications, but lacks integrity. Districts, urban communities and practices are so heterogeneous, that they often don’t interact with each other. A united space is split into fragments. Communication is replaced with alienation. Dmitry Zamyatin, geographer and researcher of culture, chief research fellow at the HSE Graduate School of Urbanism, called this phenomenon a ‘post-city’. Exploring Political and Cultural Space of St Petersburg through the Summer School 'Topography of Imperial Power'
On a grey autumn day, it is always nice to warm up by reliving memories of summer adventures. This year, the balmy weather did not leave our city till mid-October, and a summer mood also lingered at HSE University – St Petersburg with the IV International Summer School 'The Topography of Imperial Power: Political and Cultural Space of Saint Petersburg' which ran from September 11 till October 2, 2018.
In August 2018, the Faculty of Law at HSE Nizhny Novgorod hosted the annual summer school ‘Russian – Chinese Business: Cultural and Legal Aspects’. This year, the delegation from China was twice as big as last year, and the number of volunteers increased significantly, which clearly shows that summer schools with partner universities gain momentum!
The second Summer School on Deep Learning and Bayesian Methods (DeepBayes 2018) was held in Moscow from August 27 to September 1, 2018. The summer school was organized by HSE Centre of Deep Learning and Bayesian Methods and Samsung AI Center in Moscow. The lectures were taught by researchers from two centers-organizers, Skoltech, and Lomonosov Moscow State University.
The new faculty is set to reinvent the profession of urban planner in Russia. The head of the faculty, Tenured Professor, Mikhail Blinkin, spoke about what it aims to do and where it is headed.
The Russian Summer School, Masterchain, was held at the Higher School of Economics. It provided students with experience in working with this platform beyond the sphere of banking. The students collaborated on innovative projects for solving real business problems in the field of FinTech.
