‘At HSE University I Had the Opportunity to Meet the Best Academics’
In April 2024, HSE School of International Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs organised a round table ‘Russia and the Most Influential Countries of the Global South: Comparing Approaches to the New International Political and Economic-Financial Order’. Seyedmohammad Seyedi Asl, Research Fellow at the School of International Regional Studies, spoke to HSE News Service on his report ‘Global South, BRICS, and Iran's Foreign Policy’ presented at the round table, his research interests and impressions of working at HSE University, and living in Moscow.
Seyedmohammad Seyedi Asl completed his master's degree at Tehran University in Iran and his PhD at Ankara Gazi University in Turkey. Before coming to Russia, he had an opportunity to work as a researcher in Turkey and Iran.

— You've moved to Moscow in 2023. What are your impressions of working and living here?
— When I was a doctoral student, I read some of the professors' articles and I knew that HSE University had a very good ranking both in Russia and the world. It was a new experience for me, because at HSE University I had an opportunity to meet the best academics such as Professor Olga Volosyuk and Professor Andrey Baklanov and see their views on world politics closely. I am very happy to be here and at this university.
— Could you tell us about your research work at HSE University? What are you focused on?
— I am a Research Fellow at the School of International Regional Studies and working on the Middle East in general. Especially after coming to this school, I focused more specifically on the New World Order and Middle Eastern countries. In addition to regional actors, I also research the Middle East policies of global actors, such as China and India.
— Tell us a few words about your report presented at the round table ‘Russia and the Most Influential Countries of the Global South: Comparing Approaches to the New International Political and Economic-Financial Order’.
— At this roundtable, I gave a presentation on the ‘Global South, BRICS, and Iran's Foreign Policy’.
The Global South, a group of developing countries, has gained geopolitical significance in recent years. Relations with Russia and China are strengthening as engagement with Europe and the US decreases. Middle powers like Brazil, Indonesia, and South Africa are seeking strategic autonomy and political power in the international system. Institutions like BRICS, G20, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization represent the return of the Global South. BRICS has become an important forum influencing trade, investment, and politics in emerging markets. Iran's foreign policy has shown an eastward approach by joining Shanghai and BRICS, which focuses on political and security issues. Membership in BRICS offers benefits in economy and politics, as well as opportunities for regional and international relations. The BRICS Bank, known as the New Development Bank, is a significant benefit for Iran, which is subject to Western sanctions. These conditions increase Iran's geopolitical weight in the region and the world.

— What are your professional plans?
— To continue my academic studies, gain new experiences and share them whenever I have the opportunity. Currently, I am based in Moscow, and for the future, I will explore the academic possibilities that lie ahead of me.
Since I work on the Middle East, I’ve also lived in this region and have academic experiences in Turkey and Iran. This has given me unique experience that I can offer, especially to students. I noticed that the students of this faculty are very curious about the Middle East region and many of them are learning Turkish and Persian, which creates an opportunity for me to share my knowledge.
— What do you like doing in your free time?
— I like reading, especially books in other languages, and watching movies. I also enjoy sports and sometimes I do fitness. Unfortunately, I have not had the chance to see other Russian cities yet. However, I am eager to visit Saint Petersburg in the future. I do not know Russian, but I plan to start learning it soon.

Researchers from HSE and Iran University of Science and Technology Study Intellectual Resources
In February 2026, the International Laboratory of Intangible-Driven Economy (IDLab) and Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST) held a joint seminar as part of the project ‘Internationalisation of Companies from Developing Countries: The Role of Intellectual Resources in Response to Exogenous Shocks.’ The project has been implemented as part of the ‘International Academic Cooperation of HSE University’ initiative.
BRICS International School Held in Delhi
The results of the BRICS International School: New Generation, which was held in Delhi, proved that young people have become key participants in the global dialogue. The event brought together 200 young leaders from leading universities and expert centres in India. The programme was organised by the BRICS Expert Council–Russia, based at HSE University, together with the Russian House in New Delhi with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
‘For Me, HSE Is One Big Family’
Parsa Farid Almasizadeh is the winner of the HSE Outstanding Alumni Award in the nomination ‘For Special Achievements in Career and Public Life among International Alumni of HSE University’. He was born and raised in Tehran and received his higher education in Russia. After completing his master’s degree at MIEM, he stayed on to work at HSE. ‘BRICS Leaders Expect a Genuine Transformation of Grain Trade Mechanisms’
On February 4–5, 2026, the HSE BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre (BRICS Competition Centre), together with the Egyptian Competition Authority (ECA), held a meeting of the BRICS Working Group for the Research of Competition Issues in Food Markets in Cairo. The antimonopoly authorities agreed to launch a joint analysis of the grain sector to be conducted with the support of the BRICS Competition Centre and based on the centre’s research report. On the sidelines of the event, a cooperation agreement was also signed between the St Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange (SPIMEX) and the Egyptian Mercantile Exchange.
‘National Symbols of States Are an Integral Part of Cultural Code’
In December 2025, HSE University hosted the first Forum of the BRICS Law Schools Consortium organised by the HSE Faculty of Law. The forum brought together 42 international delegates (including 10 deans) from 14 universities in Belarus, China, South Africa, India, and Indonesia. The programme included expert discussions, the signing of cooperation agreements, and the adoption of decisions on the future areas of activity of the BRICS Law Schools Consortium, which was established at the initiative of the HSE Faculty of Law.
‘Cities Are Key Actors of Interaction in the Global Arena’
The HSE Faculty of Urban and Regional Development (FURD) and India’s leading research centre, the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), have agreed to strengthen their partnership comprehensively in the study and analysis of urban development across BRICS countries. In addition, students and experts from Russia and India will take part in joint academic events and research projects.
HSE University Holds HSE CS × BRICS Ideathon
On November 9, 2025, the HSE CS × BRICS Ideathon—a large-scale intensive event for students aimed at developing international project skills and finding solutions to current challenges facing BRICS countries—took place at HSE University’s Pokrovsky Bulvar campus. The event was organised by the Multilateral Strategic Projects Office with the support of the BRICS Expert Council–Russia , the Faculty of Computer Science (FCS), and the HSE FCS Hackathon Club
‘To Help Make the World More Sustainable, Fair, and Humane’
The BRICS International School: New Generation has concluded at HSE University, bringing together more than 100 participants from 38 BRICS and Global South countries. The attendees included early-career researchers, diplomats, entrepreneurs, journalists, and civil society representatives.

On October 9–10, the first-ever HSE International Alumni Reunion brought together graduates from various cohorts and programmes—now working in Russia and abroad—along with representatives of HSE University and its industry partners. The event included a tour of the campus, a business game, and a cultural festival. The participants exchanged experiences, reflected on their career paths, and discussed labour market challenges.
‘Regulators Must Understand That Absolute Predictability is Unattainable’
On October 10–11, 2025, the BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre at HSE University (the BRICS Centre) hosted a two-day international seminar, ‘Platform Economy: Competition Law and the Market Power of Digital Platforms,’ in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The event brought together competition authorities from BRICS+ nations and leading antitrust experts from around the world.
