Who Will Win the Nobel Peace Prize 2015?
On 9th October the name of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate 2015 will be announced. During ‘Nobel week’ HSE academics discuss who might be the winner.

It’s hard to say who will win the peace prize this year - there are almost three hundred contenders - but I doubt it will go to a politician. Most likely they will chose someone from the humanitarian world. The prize is a marker for the most serious problems in the world today which are civil wars and refugees. So I think the prize will go to someone who tries to solve those painful issues, to stop and prevent civil wars, protect women in conflicts and help children in war-torn areas. But it’s hard to say who exactly that could be as a lot of people work in this field. I think that Pope Francis could be a candidate as he is making huge efforts to soften people’s hearts around the world.

There are two ways to answer the question, ‘Who will win the peace prize this year?’ If you want to play predictions, I’d say honestly ‘I have no idea’, but if you want to take a critical approach, I’d say, ‘no one’.
The prize has become a hostage to politics, particularly in recent years. The main problem is that the world isn’t getting any safer. Some laureates have done more to fan the flames of conflict than put them out.
The prize has been awarded for good deeds, great works and for truly outstanding achievements.
