Joint Project of Channel One Russia, New York Film Academy, and the HSE
On April 7, 2013, Channel One Russia, together with the New York Film Academy and the Higher School of Economics, will launch the course ‘Modern Production in Cinema and Television’.
This course is for those who have dedicated or want to dedicate their lives to cinema and television. It offers a unique opportunity to unite the theory of American film production with the practice of Russia’s largest TV network.
Master classes and lecture cycles will be delivered by leading American film and TV producers, directors, and writers, such as Paul Brown, Scott Marshall, and Lydia Cedrone, as well as top executives from Channel One and the leading production companies that work with the channel. We are planning master classes led by Konstantin Ernst, CEO of Channel One; Alexander Faifman, General Producer at Channel One; Anatoly Maximov (Direktsiya Kino); Alexander Akopov (Amedia); Djanik Faiziev; Alexander Levin (Teleformat); and others.
The top graduates of the course will be invited for an internship at Channel One Russia.
On May 14, the 72nd Cannes Film Festival opens with Jim Jarmusch’s film, The Dead Don't Die. The official Russian delegation to the festival includes students of the Higher School of Cinema ‘Arka’, which offers joint continuing education programmes with HSE’s Faculty of Communications, Media, and Design. Students' short films will be shown as part of the annual almanac, Global Russians.

The Design School is launching HSE Film School, bringing together all educational levels: the BA in Film and Video-Art, Modern Art programmes, further education, post-graduate and MA studies. The HSE Vysokovsky Graduate School of Urbanism has made a documentary on renovation in Paris. In it, government officials, architects and residents of the Paris suburbs discuss social and urban projects changing the city. The film was shown on December 21 at Shukhov Lab.

In recent years, all advertising of contraceptives has disappeared from Russian television, replaced by messages denying that sex can be made safer. While television in Russia supports the state's attempts to regulate people's private lives, condom commercials have migrated to the internet, a place that still remains relatively free of government control, according to the report '(Un)safe Sex Ads as a Mirror of Political Change in Russia' by Associate Professor of the Department of Integrated Communications Lyubov Borusiak.
Rural residents are not concerned if televised news or its interpretation misrepresents information. Television plays an entertaining role in rural areas, and the internet is more and more often the primary source of news, researchers from the HSE Laboratory of Media Studies revealed in a study of media consumption in rural areas. The results were presented at the HSE’s XV April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development.
