Fields Laureate Andrey Okounkov on Where to Study Math

Columbus University Professor Andrey Okounkov is the Academic Supervisor of HSE’s International Laboratory of Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics. In an interview with Afisha, he discusses how mathematics education differs in Russia and the U.S., where his insight comes from, and whether it is true that mathematicians are in fact ‘strange individuals.’

Mathematics and the Arts: What Does Geometry and Calculus Have to Do with Salvador Dali and War and Peace?

On Tuesday 31st March 2015, Piergiorgio Odifreddi, Professor of Mathematical Logics at the University of Turin, will give a public lecture at HSE titled ‘Mathematics and the Arts’. The lecture is held in cooperation with Istituto Italiano di Cultura, and will examine the deep and close relationships between the objects of Mathematics and of the Arts.Professor Odifreddi, who is also a well-known journalist will talk about ‘a mathematical reading of the arts’, and will present a short history of the visual arts from a mathematical perspective. He talked to the HSE English News service about the surprising connections his unusual approach reveals.

Andrey Okounkov: 'Happiness Is not about Proving Something to Other People'

In the whole history of mathematics just 8 winners of the highest award - the Field Prize - have come from Russia. One of them is Andrey Okounkov, Academic Supervisor at theInternational Laboratory of Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics HSE. On Hamburg Reckoning, a weekly programme which broadcasts interviews with major academics on current Russian issues on the OTR TV channel, he talked about his journey from economics to mathematics, about the Faculty of Mathematics at HSE and what makes mathematicians happy.

The Faculty of Mathematics: A Niche for Talented People Who Don't Want to Deal with Ideology

‘Maths Teaches Modesty above All’

This year winner of the respected Fields medal Andrey Okounkov became the new head of HSE’s International Laboratory of Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics. In an interview for the HSE News website, he talked about what is a good mathematical education, why mathematicians are more free than other academics and what to tell people who find figures difficult.

Glad to be Immersed in a Very Strong Mathematical Tradition

Dr. Chris Brav, an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Mathematics has joined the HSE this year. He shared with the HSE news service his background, first impressions on living and working in Moscow and plans for future.

Mathematicians Help Detect Domestic Violence

Mathematical science can help with the detection and classification of offences. In the Netherlands, the lack of a reliable automatic police report classification system was seriously hampering the detection of domestic violence. An international group of researchers, which included Associate Professor of the HSE's Department of Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence Dmitry Ignatov found an effective solution. They proposed an automatic classification method which allows for faster detection and response to domestic violence.

Within Five Years of the Faculty’s Creation, the HSE Has Become the Leading Russian Institution of Higher Learning in Pure Mathematics

Several experts from the world’s leading universities make up the International Advisory Board at the HSE Faculty of Mathematics. They have inspected various aspects of the Faculty’s activity and summarized their findings in a recent report.

‘Internationalising Education Is an Essential Condition for Improving Standards’

The master’s programmes in mathematics and mathematical physics at the Faculty of Mathematics were started two years ago. We put our questions to the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Sergei Lando, to get a progress report.
