School of Asian Studies to Become Part of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs
On May 30, 2014, the HSE Academic Council voted to open a new ‘mega department’ – the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs. The structure of this big division will include a Department of World Economy, a Department of International Affairs, and the School of Asian Studies. Sergey Karaganov will serve as Dean of the Faculty.
According to First Vice Rector Vadim Radaev, all of the recent Academic Council sessions have ended with the creation of a ‘mega department’. This time the main structural change involves merging the School of Asian Studies, which is currently housed under the Faculty of Philosophy, with the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs. It will also include the Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies and the Institute of Trade Policy.
The Faculty is planning to develop European studies, a highly relevant topic given today’s situation in Europe and its relations with Russia.
According to Karaganov, the School of Asian Studies as part of the ‘mega department’ will maintain considerable academic independence. However, it will undergo reforms that aim to preserve its civilizational and language focus while also preparing students for work in business and public administration. The Faculty will use the School’s resources to conduct research on East and Southeast Asia.
The Faculty is planning to develop European studies, a highly relevant topic given today’s situation in Europe and its relations with Russia. It will continue to integrate research in economics, politics, culture, and anthropology. Special attention will be paid to the global economy, an area of studies where Russia is falling behind catastrophically. The Faculty will also train students in country studies, Sergey Karaganov said.
Various versions of the name for the new ‘mega department’ were proposed at the Academic Council session: global economy, politics, and Asian Studies; global politics and international affairs; global problems. The majority voted to preserve the existing brand ‘Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs’. ‘Asian studies’, which are not included in the name, will be positioned as part of the structure of the School of Asian Studies.

HSE to Open Department of Geography and Geoinformatics Technology
