HSE Strengthens Cooperation with India

The HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov met the Indian ambassador to Russia, Pundi Srinivasan Raghavan to discuss how to develop cooperation between the HSE and Indian universities.

Although the HSE’s first partnerships in the 1990s were with European universities, nowadays, it is actively seeking ties with universities in South Asia and BRICS countries, Kuzminov told the ambassador. He also drew attention to the fact that the number of foreign students and teachers at the HSE is growing constantly and they now have the experience to prepare the University for broadening academic ties with India.

In Kuzminov’s view, economics, IT, engineering, computer security, design and media communications could all be particularly fruitful areas for cooperation. A partnership with India is also of great interest for Asian studies at the HSE. The Rector says that the HSE is ready to organise student, teaching and research exchange programmes with Indian universities and colleges and research institutes.

'HSE could offer places to 150-200 students from India every year,' said Yaroslav Kuzminov. 'We have accommodation and all the necessary conditions to take on that number of foreign students.' He pointed out the opportunities for studying in English (the number courses and entire education programmes in English at HSE is increasing all the time) and mentioned the one-year Russian language course at the HSE.

Mr Raghavan, for his part, explained that more than half a million Indians study abroad these days, 15,000 of them in Russian universities. The ambassador said that it was important to raise the quality of cooperation in the field of higher education to a new level. He insisted that to make this happen a visit by Rector Kuzminov to India should be a priority as it would help both sides get better acquainted with each other’s higher education systems.
