HSE Scientists Explain Why Findings in Autism Research Differ

Researchers from the Cognitive Health and Intelligence Centre at HSE University conducted the first-ever systematic review of studies on the specifics of emotion-from-motion perception in autism. The review showed that differences found between autistic and non-autistic individuals are largely associated with the experimental design and the types of tasks given to study participants. The review findings have been published in Research in Autism.
Understanding emotions is a complex process that is crucial for successful social interaction. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may experience difficulties recognising emotions due to the characteristics of their sensory, motor, and social profiles. While emotion perception from facial expressions and vocal cues has been relatively well studied, recognising emotions from biological motion—such as gait, head tilt, posture, or gestures—remains a much less explored area.
In some of the reviewed studies, the authors report a significant reduction in the ability of individuals with ASD to recognise emotions from motion, while other studies find only minimal differences between autistic and neurotypical participants.
To systematise the existing evidence, researchers from the HSE Cognitive Health and Intelligence Centre searched the PubMed and ScienceDirect databases and selected 16 publications on emotion-from-motion perception in autistic and non-autistic individuals. In total, the combined sample included more than 1,300 children and adults. The analysis focused on three key methodological aspects: experimental paradigms, stimulus characteristics, and types of control tasks.
The review showed that study outcomes were directly related to the experimental design. In total, seven different types of tasks were identified, but only two were used in most of the reviewed studies. In tasks requiring verbal naming of emotions, autistic participants consistently performed worse than non-autistic controls. In more structured tasks, such as rating the intensity of an emotion or comparing emotional states, differences between the groups often disappeared. In several tasks, autistic participants demonstrated performance that was equal to or even more accurate than that of the control group.
The authors point out that the range of emotions examined in the experiments was too limited to allow broad generalisation. Comparisons with control tasks indicate that the difficulties are not related to processing motion or emotions separately but rather to extracting emotional meaning from movement.

'We can see that difficulties do not always arise, nor do they appear in all conditions. This suggests that we are not dealing with a universal deficit but rather with a high sensitivity to task format. The type of experimental task, the level of structure in the instructions, whether verbalisation is required, and the overall experimental design all influence the study results,' notes study author Elena Gavrilova, Junior Research Fellow at the Cognitive Health and Intelligence Centre.
'The question needs to be framed differently: not "Can autistic people recognise emotions from movement?" but rather "Under what conditions do differences arise, and why?”' Gavrilova emphasises.
Based on the review, the authors developed recommendations aimed at making research in this area more consistent and informative. In particular, they propose directly comparing different experimental tasks within a single study, developing standardised stimuli and methodological approaches, and more widely applying neurophysiological methods, open data, and reproducible research designs. Such steps will help move from heterogeneous findings toward a more comprehensive understanding of how individuals with ASD perceive emotions, and how this knowledge can be applied in education, clinical practice, and support strategies.

Economists Propose More Effective Approach to Reducing Smoking
Economists at HSE University have examined how smokers respond to changes in cigarette prices. When tobacco prices increase, cigarette consumption does not always decline. In fact, spending on tobacco may even rise: according to the researchers, a 1% decrease in cigarette affordability leads to a 0.28% increase in per capita tobacco expenditure. The findings suggest that to reduce smoking rates, tobacco prices must rise faster than household incomes. The study has been published in Voprosy Statistiki.
Biologists Discover Unique Properties of MiR-93-5p MicroRNA in Prostate Cancer
Researchers at the International Laboratory of Microphysiological Systems of the HSE Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology investigated how different isoforms of the same microRNA influence gene function in prostate adenocarcinoma. The study found that in some cases, microRNAs can reinforce each other’s effects by targeting and suppressing the same genes. This finding offers a fresh perspective on the molecular mechanisms underlying tumour development and on the search for disease biomarkers. The results have been published in PeerJ.
HSE Researchers Provide the World’s First Legal Definition of a Digital Ecosystem
Digital ecosystems have evolved from a technological innovation into a fundamental institution of the modern economy over the past few years. According to HSE University’s latest estimates, they account for 8.5% of Russia’s GDP. Previously, no jurisdiction had a statutory definition of what constitutes a digital ecosystem. HSE Economists Use Search Queries to Forecast Birth Rates
Researchers from the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences have shown that the accuracy of birth rate forecasts for Russia can be improved by almost 50% by incorporating the dynamics of online search queries related to pregnancy and childbirth into forecasting models. In the best-performing models, the forecasting error fell from 4.6% to 3.2%. The findings have been published in Populations and Economics.
When Looking at Their Own Faces, Men Forget Everything
In an experiment involving 15 healthy men, scientists at HSE University investigated how different phases of the cardiac cycle influence the excitability of the motor cortex when participants viewed either their own photograph or the faces of strangers. The researchers found that when participants looked at their own image, the brain’s response to signals from the heart was weaker, meaning that the influence of cardiac activity on the motor cortex decreased. This finding came contrary to expectations, as self-focused attention was thought to enhance the brain's sensitivity to internal bodily signals. Based on the classical theory of evolutionary games, the study reveals an unexpected effect: even a weak informational influence of one society on another can cause one society to remain stable while the other exhibits chaotic behaviour among its individual members. Ancient Craniiform Brachiopod: A Newly Discovered Species with a Unique Shell Shape and Lifestyle
Scientists from HSE University, MSU, and Tallinn University of Technology have studied a fossil species of ancient brachiopods that lived in a warm sea in what is now northern Estonia more than 445 million years ago. These ancient brachiopods developed a cup-shaped shell with a protective 'cap' that shielded them from overgrowth by other marine organisms.
