Four HSE Mathematics Graduates Win Russia’s Young Mathematicians Award
The winners of the Young Mathematicians of Russia Award were announced at the 6th Conference of Russia’s Mathematical Centres, held in Kazan in late August 2026. Four of the nine award recipients are graduates of the HSE Faculty of Mathematics: Associate Professor Alexander Kalmynin, PhD students Alexander Zaitsev and Petr Kucheryavyy, and researcher Dmitry Pirozhkov.
The Young Mathematicians of Russia Award was established by the Talent and Success Educational Foundation, coordinated by the Sirius International Mathematics Centre. Candidates are nominated by renowned mathematicians who are actively engaged in research. The award recognises significant achievements in mathematical research in three categories: Students, PhD Students, and Young Scientists. Up to three equal awards are presented in each category.
Alexander Kalmynin, a graduate and lecturer at the Faculty of Mathematics, is known for his research achievements in number theory. As a school student, he won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad. In the coming academic year, he will become the academic coordinator of the Mathematicians of the Future track, which will be launched at HSE’s Faculty of Mathematics this autumn. Alexander Kalmynin is also the academic supervisor of another award recipient, PhD student Petr Kucheryavyy. Another winner, PhD student Alexander Zaitsev, completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the HSE Faculty of Mathematics. Dmitry Pirozhkov, who graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics in 2019, currently works at the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Alexandra Skripchenko, Dean of the HSE Faculty of Mathematics, emphasised the importance of training early-career researchers for the development of fundamental science. ‘The main task of any faculty focused on fundamental science is not only to ensure that cutting-edge research is conducted today, but also to train young scientists who will shape the future of our science. That is why we at the Faculty of Mathematics are very pleased that our work in this area has received such high recognition from the mathematical community across the country. We are proud of our young colleagues and have no doubt that each of them has a brilliant future in mathematics ahead of them, and we will be delighted to be part of that future,’ Alexandra Skripchenko said.
The 6th Conference of Russia’s Mathematical Centres was held at Kazan Federal University and brought together members of the mathematical community, from academicians to early-career researchers. The conference programme focused on current areas of mathematical science, as well as methods and approaches related to the development of mathematical research. The event was organised by the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Russian Academy of Sciences, Kazan Federal University, the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan, and the Volga Federal District Regional Scientific and Education Mathematical Centre.

Mathematician from HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod Solves Equation Considered Unsolvable in Quadratures Since 19th Century
Mathematician Ivan Remizov from HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod and the Institute for Information Transmission Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences has made a conceptual breakthrough in the theory of differential equations.
