30%

of all Russian companies use fixed-term employment contracts.

Companies using fixed-term employment contracts hire and fire workers more frequently than other companies. Instead of using them to build staffs of highly qualified employees (i.e., people beginning for a probationary period before becoming full staff members), Russian companies employ people under fixed-term employment contracts ‘without obligations’ for a certain period of time before terminating the contracts.

These data are presented in a report by Larisa Smirrnykh, Deputy Head of HSE’s Laboratory for Labour Market Studies, entitled ‘Fixed-term Employment Contracts, Job Creation and Employment: Findings from Russian Enterprises.’
