53%

of adolescents living in rural areas want to leave school after the 9th grade.

At the same time, 20% of young people from major cities and only 15% of students from small towns choose this path.

These data are presented in a study by Daniil Alexandrov, head of the HSE Laboratory of Sociology in Education and Science, and Svetlana Savelyeva, deputy head of the laboratory, entitled ‘Local Effects in the Propagation of Inequality through Education’.

The study is based on three case studies in the Leningrad Region: the highly developed metropolis of St. Petersburg, the small town of Kirishi, which enjoys favourable socio-economic conditions, and Priozersk, a rural area characterized by uneven development.
