Higher Education in Russia and Beyond: From Russia with Math

The sixth issue of HERB dedicated to mathematics is now available. There are three sections in the issue. The first section is devoted to the analysis of mathematical education in the USSR and modern Russia, the second one features the career opportunities for those, who received mathematical education in Russia, and the third section describes the current situation with mathematics in universities.

The Bulletin also features the articles by HSE leading mathematicians – ‘Reasons for the Success of the Soviet Mathematical School’ by Vladlen Timorin, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and ‘Mathematical Education in Universities in the Soviet Union and Modern Russia’ by Sergei Lando, Professor at the Faculty of Mathematics.

Higher Education in Russia and Beyond (HERB) is a quarterly informational journal published by National Research University Higher School of Economics since 2014. HERB covers the transformation process of higher education institutions in Russia and the counties of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The journal presents multiple-aspect opinions about current challenges and trends of regional higher education and give examples of the best local practices. The audience is a wide international community of scholars and professionals in the field of higher education all over the world. The project is implemented as part of cooperation agreement between Higher School of Economics and Boston College Center of International Higher Education.

‘HSE University Was a Gateway into the Wider World of Science’

Fernanda Florido-Calvo came to HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod from Chile to study mathematics. HSE University Researchers to Speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians

The year 2020 was a period of economic hardship and significant change in a wide range of sectors for most countries. A team of authors from HSE University has explored how Russia will recover from this crisis and which industries will be affected by the economic recovery. Their study was published in the journal Voprosy ekonomiki.

The New RSCI List Now Includes 887 Journals

The Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI) quality assessment and journal selection working group based on Web of Science has completed its updates to the RSCI list. The group particularly considered journals that submitted 219 initiative applications last year. The updated list includes 87 new journals, with 2 journals having been excluded.

Educational Studies Journal Enters Scopus Q1

Educational Studies, an academic journal founded by HSE University in 2004, has become the first Russian journal to enter the first quartile in Education in Scopus. This success relies on high requirements and thorough selection of publications, when the editorial board tries to select not just good papers, but particularly innovative studies.

HSE Faculty of Mathematics Receives Mega-Grant from the Russian Government

43 projects from all over the country were awarded grants in Russia’s Eighth Mega-Grant Competition. HSE University’s application in support of the creation of a world-class laboratory in mathematics was among the winners. The academic supervisor of the new laboratory will be Professor Michael Shapiro of Michigan State University (USA).
