HSE Sociologists Present on Life Trajectories of Russian Pupils at Yale Conference
A group of sociologists from the HSE presented the results of their academic work at the 10th conference of Yale University’s Center for Cultural Sociology. A special panel session of the conference was devoted entirely to the research being carried out by HSE’s Institute of Education on the life trajectories of Russian pupils.
The Centre of Cultural Sociology and Anthropology of Education of HSE’s Institute of Education launched this longitudinal research project in 2009, and the project is set to finish in 2027. Tens of thousands of respondents are participating in the study. These respondents were all 14 or 15 years old when the project began and they will be over 30 when it finishes. Both quantitative and qualitative sociological research is taking place. In addition, a large amount of information on the participants’ skills is being collected, as is information on the schools they attend, their teachers, and other factors. How does the selection process for education and professions take place; how do people set up for their future life; which objective circumstances and personal aspirations have an effect on this – these are just a handful of the study’s main questions.
At the panel session of Yale’s conference devoted to the life trajectories of pupils, analytic approaches and the latest results of the study were presented in the context of the emerging “cultural sociology of education” sub-discipline. Aside from Russian participants Dmitry Kurakin and Ekaterina Pavlenko, the panel session also included Timothy Malacarne of Yale University and Werner Binder of Masaryk University (Czech Republic), who are both also working on the project.
Other HSE sociologists presented the results of their research at the conference as well. This includes employees of the cultural sociological group at the Centre for Fundamental Sociology of Poletayev Institute for Historical and Theoretical Studies in Humanities. Nataliya Komarova discussed the preliminary results of her dissertation on the art market of BRICS countries, and Varvara Kobyshcha talked about research on the perception of graffiti in urban spaces.
