Russian Political Economy Discussed in U.S.
At Columbia University in New York, a seminar on ‘The Political Economy of Russia’ was held jointly by the International Centre for the Study of Institutions and Development at the Higher School of Economics and the Harriman Institute at Columbia University.
Taking part in the meeting were researchers and experts from China, Germany, Russia and the U.S., including Timothy Frye, Academic Supervisor of the International Centre for the Study of Institutions and Development; Daniel Treisman, member of the International Advisory Committee; Andrei Yakovlev, director of the Institute for Industrial and Market Studies; Lev Freinkman, senior research fellow at the Institute for Industrial and Market Studies; as well as Thomas Remington and William Pyle, research fellows at the International Centre for the Study of Institutions and Development, Professor Katharina Pistor of Columbia University and other researchers.
The seminar included several sessions in which employees from the HSE’s Institute for Industrial and Market Studies presented research on analysis of problems related to collective action in an imperfect institutional environment, development of the institution of trust, social capital formation, the impact of cultural heterogeneity on political institutions, and problems of regional political institutions.
During the seminar, participants also discussed areas for development of projects and international cooperation at the International Centre for the Study of Institutions and Development. Staff from the centre received feedback on their work, and research plans for 2015 were outlined. Additionally, the discussion programme included methodological sessions devoted to field experiments and analysis of data on networks and networking.
‘The seminar on ‘Political Economy in Russia’ was valuable in that each report by the members of our institute, every study that was discussed at the sessions, was broken down exhaustively by leading scholars in their respective fields of research,’ says Andrey Tkachenko, junior researcher at the Institute for Industrial and Market Studies. ‘In order to ensure high quality research, researchers need their work to be fully discussed by recognized colleagues.’
The seminar was part of a project called ‘Incentives for Bureaucracy, Protection of Property Rights and Production of Public Goods,’ which is being carried out under the HSE’s Basic Research Programme. Similar international discussions are held by the Institute for Industrial and Market Studies at least once every year.

On Wednesday, December 11, 2013, Nancy Folbre, Professor of Economics, University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA, will give a talk at the Faculty of Sociology of the HSE within the International Research Seminar Series ‘Sociologies of Morality’. She is a feminist economist who focuses on economics and the family (or family economics), non-market work and the economics of care. We spoke to Nancy Folbre before the lecture.
