Exhibition about 1968 Events Opens in HSE Building
A new exposition in the assembly hall of the HSE building on Staraya Basmannaya is dedicated to the events of August 1968: the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Soviet troops. Here, you can see declassified documents from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union archives; leaflets and posters; amateur photos by railroad worker Josef Kut illustrating what was happening on the streets of Prague; and a ‘graphic diary’ by Czech artist Jiří Jirásek.
‘When we were creating the exhibition, we wanted to show the 1968 events from different perspectives,’ said Maria Shteinman, one of the exhibition curators, ‘because, as paradoxically as it sounds, only the sound of many voices can let us hear the truth. This must be a sound of voices that don’t shout down on each other and don’t sing in a choir, but create a polyphony, a dialogue.’ This need for multiple voices is why the 73 exhibits were taken not only from Russian archives, but from Czech ones as well.
The State Archive of the Russian Federation provided letters by Czech citizens to the Soviet embassy asking for the occupation to be stopped. Written and signed by thousands of people, these letters are being exhibited for the first time. The Russian State Archive of Contemporary History sent declassified transcripts of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The Russian State Archive of Literature and Art shared signatures by Soviet dissidents Alexander Galich and Naum Korzhavin. The exhibition also displays letters from Natalya Gorbanevskaya to imprisoned Yuly Daniel, marking the first time these letters have been shared. The Russian State Archive of Film and Photo Documents also contributed to the exposition.
From the Czech side, the National Museum of Czech Republic and Libri Prohibiti, a library of Czech prohibited books, provided invaluable help for the exhibition. They shared leaflets and posters that were distributed extensively by peaceful citizens and are also being shown for the first time. The Czech National Film Archive provided the film Chaos (1968) along with amateur video footage of the Prague events.
‘The photos by Josef Kut appeared in the exposition impromptu,’ said Jan Makhonin, a Russia researcher, translator and writer from the Czech Republic. ‘Shortly before the exhibition, I was contacted by the Memorial Society, which asked me to help them determine the author of one photo. Josef Kut, a railroad worker and amateur photographer who documented the atmosphere of the 1968 Prague streets, turned out to be the author. Today, his works are making their debut at the exhibition.’
In addition, a ‘graphic diary’ by Czech artist Jiří Jirásek is being exhibited in Moscow for the first time. His drawings can be found on the second floor of the assembly hall. The artist describes his diary, his motif was ‘a profane Face, borrowed by the theatre of criminals… a motif of a raped woman, the country of Czechoslovakia. Not a man killed on the streets in those August days, but a profaned woman! Crushed by a tank, raped by iron! This is how approximately a hundred small drawings appeared, drawn with a thin pen with black ink. In fact, nothing big and heart-breaking, just diary notes, initially intended only for me.’
More information on the 1968 events is available on the virtual exhibition, where visitors can see the main exposition. The opening of five topical ‘rooms’ – Transcripts, Letters, Photos, Posters and leaflets, and Drawings by Jiří Jirásek – is scheduled for January 16, 2019, which is the 50th anniversary of Jan Palach’s self-immolation. The topical rooms will be prepared by master’s students together with archive staff. There are plans to put a total of 400 exhibits on display.
September marks the one-year anniversary of HSE’s gallery of contemporary art, HSE ART GALLERY – an exhibition space for the HSE Art and Design School. HSE News Service spoke with gallery participants about the gallery’s first exhibition of the new season, the gallery’s future plans, and student art.
On June 18, the HSE Art Gallery opened a new exhibition, Comrades of Light, a full-scale installation simulating the space of a Soviet apartment with barely noticeable mutations and distortions. Within this space an alternative history of the Soviet Union unfolds on a sequence of matchbox labels, some of which are copies of real labels from the 1950-80s, and some of which are the creations of project authors Alexandra Kuzetsova and Darya Dolgopolova.
The exposition ‘Osip Mandelstam – End of the Road’ located in the HSE building at 20 Myasnitskaya Street in Moscow reconstructs the final 11 weeks of the poet’s life and profiles many of his contemporaries.
The HSE Art Gallery is the first of its kind among Russian universities. The gallery is expected to become a space for established contemporary artists and students to work together and share their experiences with one another. They will be able to not only present their works at the gallery, but also participate in the creation of exhibitions.
The exhibition Design NEXT opened last Wednesday at the Central House of Artists in Moscow’s Krimsky Val area. This is the continuation of the first Moscow Biennale of Design, which took place in 2017. During the event, group exhibitions by Moscow design universities were all brought together at a single location. The exhibition also featured personal expositions by Russian graphic, industrial, and fashion designers, including Anna Kulachek and School of Design Curators Alexandra Lartseva, Stephan Lashko, Philipp Tretyakov, and Tim Yarzhombek.
Mass graves became a reality of the first decades of Soviet Russia: victims of the revolution, famine, epidemics, political repression, the Civil War and World War II were often buried in common rather than individual graves. Over the centuries, Russians had regarded such practice as unusual and rarely acceptable. Soviet power needed to change popular mentality and give a new meaning to mass burials for both ideological and political reasons. Svetlana Malysheva studied this phenomenon.
On January 15, HSE welcomed Stephen Kotkin, Professor of History at Princeton University and Associated Senior Research Fellow at HSE’s International Centre for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences. Professor Kotkin spoke about his new book, Stalin: Waiting for Hitler, 1919-1941 (New York, 2017) to an audience of students, staff, fellow researchers and members of the general public.
HSE School of Art and Design, in conjunction with UNIQLO, has unveiled a new exhibition entitled, 'New Life for Old Things'. The exhibition showcases a vast array of ingenious ways to give new life to old things - the most important aspect of sustainable fashion.
On November 1, Riccardo Cucciolla began a postdoctoral fellowship at the HSE International Centre for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences. During his year at HSE, he intends to pursue a research project that follows from his dissertation entitled ‘The Crisis of Soviet Power in Central Asia: The Uzbek Cotton Affair (1975–1991)’, which he wrote while completing a PhD in Political History at the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca in Lucca, Italy.
This exhibition, located at the HSE building on Staraya Basmannaya Ulitsa, near the Mandelstam Centre, tells the story of all the important stages in the poet’s life and work. It features photos, announcements of poetry nights, and documents testifying to Mandelstam’s arrest and death, as well as comments by the poet’s contemporaries.
