Innovation and Art: HSE University to Participate in Organizing an Art Residency Programme

On November 6, Artigit’l, an online art residence, begins. This is a free international programme for artists, arts lovers, software developers and people working in the digital sphere. The HSE University Department of Innovation Management is one of the residency organizers.

The project authors see their aim as new evolving art teams that work at the intersection of technology, innovation and art. One of the authors is Timofey Golovin, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Innovation Management. He has been conducting a project seminar on the master’s programme ‘Corporate Research, Development and Innovation Management’ for a few years, and regularly participates in various events that promote entrepreneurship culture at the university.

The concept of Artigit’l grew from an idea about a hackathon that was supposed to bring developers and artists together. Since about 2017, I had been delaying its launch, but then, there was the lockdown, I launched my start-up, and the solution to the puzzle presented itself: we can do everything online, add an educational part, a ‘sandbox’, and invite anyone who wants to try their hand in arts, from all over the world.

The residence jury is currently choosing the programme participants, by evaluating their motivation, background and English proficiency (it needs to be good enough to understand the lectures and communicate with participants from different countries). Teams from Great Britain, Canada, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Belgium, France and China have already applied. The selection process finishes on November 1st, and just five days later, the participants will start their art residency curriculum. The programme lasts eight weeks.

Our department decided to participate in the project, since our basic profile is innovation, and this residency project aims to foster innovations in art. We have students who are professional artists and who have enrolled in the master’s programme ‘Corporate Research, Development and Innovation Management’ specifically to get systemic knowledge and applied competencies in innovation in the arts.

Upon completion of the programme, the participants will be able to display their works on an online exhibition before a jury that includes gallery owners and curators from different countries. The teams with the best art projects will get the opportunity to continue their collaboration with leading professionals.

More information on the art residency and its curriculum is available on the official website.

Anthropological Pirouette

For a long time, it was mainly art and theatre critics who wrote for a wide audience about dance from a spectator’s perspective. Later, philosophers and ethnographers began to study dance from different angles. But only when people with first-hand experience, i.e. dancers, joined in, did dance and movement studies get off to a real start. Irina Sirotkina explains how dance studies evolved in the 20th century.
