‘It Is Difficult Times like These that Bring Us Closer Together’

On March 23, the working group of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education devoted to university education met again to discuss how education should be organized as Russia seeks to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In particular, the group discussed tactics involving volunteerism on university campuses, examples from universities abroad, and developing student questionnaires in order to pinpoint the issues that Russian universities have encountered in their transition to distance learning.

‘We Have Serious Opportunities to Increase the Contribution of Sports to Russia's GDP’

On March 5, leaders and professionals of the sports industry met at HSE University for a conference about the football industry, its economic potential, and education. At the conference, Russian Minister of Sports Oleg Matytsin and Alexei Sorokin, general director of the organizing committee for EURO 2020 in St. Petersburg, announced that despite the current coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship will run as scheduled. Stanislav Cherchesov, Head Coach of the Russian National Team, discussed how the team will prepare for the tournament, and HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov gave remarks regarding the economic potential of Russia’s sports industry.

The book ‘Exploring Universal Basic Income. A Guide to Navigating Concepts, Evidence, and Practices’ was presented at an HSE University event, which was organized by the HSE Institute of Social Policy. During the event, participants noted the foundational nature of the publication prepared by the World Bank experts and held an emotional debate on the prospects of introducing a universal basic income.

Sberbank and HSE Institute of Education to Cooperate on Landmark 21st Century Skills Project

Sberbank’s Charity Foundation and the HSE Institute of Education have recently agreed to cooperate on a milestone 21st century skills research and development project. With multiple representatives of the academic and business communities, among others, this collaborative endeavour aims to deliver visible improvements to Russia’s education system. In particular, the project will involve devising a clear approach to identifying, evaluating, and deploying core next-generation skills and competencies that consider national socioeconomic and educational contexts alongside global best practice.

HSE Takes Part in Columbia’s University Consortium

On November 6, the first module of the University Consortium began at Columbia University (New York). The Consortium was formed this autumn by Columbia, Harvard, the Free University of Berlin, Oxford, the Higher School of Economics, and the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. Students and faculty from the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs represent HSE in the project.

HSE St Petersburg has hosted a seminar entitled “Creative spaces: dream or dream solution?”, with the participation of Melanie Post van Ophem, former chair of the Rotterdam Council for Arts and Culture, and Hans Karel Wesseling, Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in St Petersburg.
