If You Set Yourself Ambitious Tasks

On November 15 Daniel Treisman, Professor of Political Science at the University of California, gave a lecture on ‘Topical Problems of Teaching and Research in Political Economy’. One of the leading political scientists in the world, Professor Treisman arrived in Moscow as an expert member of the International Advisory Committee for the HSE’s Programme of Development as a National Research University. What does he think about the prospects for our university?

We had a Lot of Opposition

Sir Michael Barber, a former Chief Adviser on Delivery to the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, the head of McKinsey’s Global Education Practice, and a Visiting Professor and a member of the HSE International Advisory Committee told HSE News Service if we can compare institutions with their graduates’ Unified State Exam results, how to pay teachers bonuses, and what mistakes British reformers made and how Russia can avoid repeating these.

Faculty of Public Administration: New International Perspectives

On October 28th and 29th the first French-Russian Conference took place at the Higher School of Economics, involving discussions on double-degree cooperation programmes and PhD and research collaboration in public administration. Is there bureaucracy in France and what should future officials know? Marcel Guenoun, Professor at Paul Cezanne Aix-Marseille 3 University, and Jean Michel Eymeri Douzans, Deputy Director of SciencePo Toulouse, answered those questions.

Facebook: the Platform of Success

On October 22nd Robert Johnson, Director of Engineering at Facebook, gave a talk at the Faculty of Business Informatics of the Higher School of Economics, invited by the Department of Innovations and Business in Information Technologies. His talk was devoted to the rise of Facebook from 10 million to half a billion active users.

On October 12th Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor of California, spoke to HSE students at a seminar organized by WWF Russia and the Higher School of Economics.

Equal Opportunities and the ‘Disinterested Government’

On October 4th a special session of the Political Economy research seminar took place at the HSE Faculty of Economics. Yang Yao, Deputy Dean of the National School of Development and Professor at the Center for Economic Research, Beijing University, spoke about ‘Equality, the Disinterested Government, and Economic Growth: The Case of China’.

Geoffrey Crossick, Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, took part in the HSE International College of Economics and Finance graduation ceremony on September 16th. ‘We Continue Hoping for Reasonable Changes in Russia’

On July 15th students from the HSE and the University of Lucerne met with Stefan Estermann, Deputy Ambassador of Switzerland in Russia. The meeting took place at the HSE as part of the Russian-Swiss Summer School.
