From values to behaviour: interdisciplinary studies of regional differences in Russia

An international workshop took place at HSE Moscow, on October 23, 2018.

The International Laboratory for Experimental and Behavioural Economics will systematically inquire into how preferences on cooperation and competition and associated behaviours are distributed over a multitude of Russian regions. We will study the determinants of cooperative and competitive behaviour by means of laboratory experiments (involving a monetary tradeoff between cooperative and competitive behavior) and questionnaire data, and relate them to intra-national (inter-regional) and inter-national social and economic indicators. Our starting point is the question whether collectivist values still prevail in the new, post-transitional society. Further, we look at how social preferences shape social norms regarding the behavior directed at Russians from the same or from other regions but also toward people from other countries. Unlike previous studies, our work will involve long-distance interactions of people from different regions of the country, as well as with foreign counterparts using broadband internet connection in real time, which may be viewed as a major methodological contribution.
