IARIW-HSE Conference on “Experiences and Challenges in Measuring Income and Wealth in Eastern Europe and CIS Countries” September 17-18, 2019, Moscow, Russia

The International Association for Research in Income and Wealth (IARIW), in partnership with the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE), announces a call for papers for the conference “Experiences and Challenges in Measuring Income and Wealth in Eastern Europe and CIS Countries” which will take place at HSE in Moscow, Russia, September 17-18, 2019. The conference is supported by the Interstate Statistical Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS-Stat) and the Federal State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation (Rosstat).

The objective of this special IARIW-HSE conference is to advance our understanding on issues related to national accounts, prices, productivity, income and wealth distribution, poverty, and economic well-being in the countries of Eastern Europe and of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) through an examination of past experiences related to the measurement of trends in these variables and the identification of future measurement challenges.

  • Specific topics in which proposals for papers are invited include the following: 
  • Metrics for quantifying the impact of globalization on Eastern European and CIS countries; 
  • Supply and Use tables in understanding economic growth; 
  • Sub-national macroeconomic indicators and national accounts; 
  • PPP based comparisons across and within countries; 
  • Income and wealth inequality considerations and consequences in post-transition economies; 
  • Measuring and understanding long-run productivity and economic growth; 
  • Natural resources: implications for economic measurement and for well-being; 
  • Improving measurement of price indexes such as the CPI and PPI; and quality adjustment issues 
  • Effects of digitization on the measurement of growth, inflation and economic well-being 
  • Broader measures of wealth as sustainability indicators. 

Papers may be on specific countries of the region, comparisons between two or more countries in the region, or comparisons between countries of the region and other parts of the world. Methodological papers on key economic measurement problems relevant to the region are also welcome.

A program committee co-chaired by Marshall Reinsdorf (IMF) and Ilya Voskoboynikov (HSE, Russia) will oversee the development of the conference program. Selected papers from the conference will be published in a special issue of the Review of Income and Wealth.

Papers will be subjected to the standard RIW refereeing process. Persons interested in presenting a paper at the conference are asked to submit a proposal of less than 1,000 words at http://iariw.org/paper_submission2019moscow.php.

Proposals must be in English. The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2019. Decisions will be communicated by February 15, 2019.
