Centre for Health Economics, Management and Policy Marks Two Years

Centre for Health Economics, Management and Policy - or CHEMP, as it is known - was launched two years ago. Today CHEMP offers a unique opportunity to unite and internationalize the emerging body of education and research in the field of health studies. CHEMP’s Director Professor Christopher Gerry, Chair of Internationalisation Steering Group and Academic Adviser to Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at HSE St. Petersburg, provides an update on the Centre’s activities and achievements.

New CHEMP publication on smoking

CHEMP is pleased to announce the release of a new publication by CHEMP Director Christopher J Gerry and CHEMP Research Fellow, Diana Quirmbach.  The paper, “Gender, education and Russia’s tobacco epidemic: A life-course approach” examines the smoking histories of Russian’s surveyed in the  Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey of HSE (RLMS-HSE) and the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS).The authors examine the dynamics of smoking patterns over the past 7 decades and find that smoking rates differ most strongly by gender within all cohorts, but that this differential has decreased over time, driven by increases in female smoking and more recently by decreases in smoking among men. The publication appears in Social Science and Medicine, a Q1 journal and one of the leading outlets in the Public Health field.

The workshop on 'Health Economics in Russia: past, present and future?' was hosted by the International Centre for Health Economics, Management and Policy (CHEMP) of HSE Saint Petersburg on March 21, 2016 within the International Spatial Development Forum.

First HSE St. Petersburg course in Health Economics begins....

In January 2016, the first official bachelors course in Health Economics began at the St. Petersburg campus of HSE. The course provides an extensive introduction to the main themes of contemporary Health Economics, will run for 9 weeks and has almost 50 Economics finalists enrolled on it.

‘It Is Important for Us to Turn HSE into a World-class Research University’

On December 7, the sixth meeting of the HSE International Advisory Committee opened with leading experts from around the world in the field of science and education coming together to discuss the university’s achievements and the challenges it faces, as well as its objectives for the coming years. Following two days of discussions, the committee members will form recommendations on changes to the primary areas of development.

UNITO and HSE St. Petersburg Boost Cooperation

In late June an official delegation from HSE St. Petersburg comprising Sergey Kadochnikov, Alexander Semyonov, Tatyana Alexeeva, Elena Rogova and Christopher Gerry visited Turin university, where they signed an agreement on cooperation.

New International Labs at HSE St. Petersburg to Study Economy of Health and Game Theory

On June 26, the HSE Academic Council approved the opening of two new international laboratories. Specifically, the St. Petersburg School of Economics and Management will gain a laboratory for the study of healthcare economics, management, and policy, as well as a laboratory for game theory and decision-making. The labs' academic supervisors will be renowned international scholars.
