First Co-Editor-in-Chief
PALGRAVE RESEARCH HANDBOOK OF VOLUNTEERING AND NONPROFIT ASSOCIATIONS
– настоящее время (4 года 9 месяцев)
I designed and am first Co-Editor of this massive, 60-chapter, expected 850-page, research handbook now in process. Like any handbook, this one summarizes current knowledge. Our handbook is distinctive in focusing on published knowledge from the social sciences and social professions on topics in book title. The handbook will be published in 2015 by Palgrave Macmillan, of Basingstoke, UK. Chapter co-authors will come from about 70 birth-nations and many social science disciplines and related professional fields. The Handbook is sponsored by ICSERA---the International Council of Voluntarism, Civil Society, and Social Economy Researcher Associations (founded by D.H.Smith in 2010). See the website in development at <www.icsera.org>. The website contains details on the contents of the Handbook.

President & CEO
International Council of Voluntarism, Civil Society, and Social Economy Researcher Associations Inc.
– настоящее время (6 лет)
In 2010, I formed the International Council of Voluntarism, Civil Society, and Social Economy Researcher Associations (ICSERA; www.icsera.org). With organizational (collective) members only, ICSERA seeks to become a global association of existing altruistics researcher associations. ICSERA is a global, nonprofit, infrastructure and support organization for altruistics that is unique in its central purposes: (a) to gather and share relevant information on altruistics researcher associations, research centers, academic journals, departments, etc. through its website; (b) to foster new, independent, national and regional associations and to strengthen existing ones in all world regions; (c) to strengthen and help grow the global field of altruistics collaboratively by providing a discussion forum for leaders of interdisciplinary altruistics researcher associations; and (d) to collaborate with and help build the global membership of ARNOVA and ISTR as the principal global associations of individual altruistics researchers.
ALTRUISTICS is one new name I suggest for the entire field of research on the nonprofit and voluntary sector. An alternative name is VOLUNTARISTICS. The neologism "altruistics" OR "voluntaristics" refers to all the related phenomena of our field, individual and collective. Included are philanthropy, the nonprofit sector, third sector, voluntary sector, civil society (sector), social economy, volunteering, associations, and nonprofit organizations, among other topics. This simple term, analogous to the term linguistics for study of human languages, seeks to bring some global consensus on a single word to refer to our field. -

Founder and first President/Board Chair; first Executive Officer
ARNOVA
– (4 года)
I was the inventor, Founder, first President and Board Chair, and later first Executive Officer of ARNOVA, THE ASSOCIATION FOR RESEARCH ON NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS AND VOLUNTARY ACTION (see www.arnova.org). At the same time I founded and was first Editor-in-Chief of ARNOVA's academic journal, the first in the world, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly (NVSQ), listed in the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) since the 1980s.
I also founded two formal Sections (sub-groups) of ARNOVA: THE COMMUNITY AND GRASSROOTS ASSOCIATIONS SECTION (CGAP), AND THE VALUES SECTION (VALUES, RELIGION, ALTRUISM, AND DRAWBACKS/VRADS) SECTION.
See my article in 2003, "A History of ARNOVA," ”Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, 32 (3), 458-472. See also my earlier 1999 article, “Researching Volunteer Associations and Other Nonprofits: An Emergent Interdisciplinary Field and Possible New Discipline.” The American Sociologist 30 (4, Winter):5-35.
Most recently, see my August 2013 article on the global growth of our field of VOLUNTARISTICS or ALTRUISTICS: Smith, David Horton. “Growth of Research Associations and Journals in the Emerging Discipline of Altruistics.” Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly 42(4): 638-656.
This article lists and discusses the 39 active interdisciplinary researcher associations and 95 active, peer-reviewed, academic journals that have been founded in our field in the past several decades.
When the founding dates are plotted on a graph, the recent growth of the organized field of VOLUNTARISTICS-ALTRUISTICS that I founded has been exponential (Very rapid) since about 1990.
