HSE Students Explore Environmental Problems at Summer School in South Urals

The summer school 'Space in/for Environmental Humanities: Reconsidering the Global through Studying Peripheries' explored the impact of human activity on natural environments and their transformation. It was co-organised by the School of Environmental and Social Studies (Anthroposchool) at the University of Tyumen (TSU) and the HSE Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities (IGITI), with support from the Mirror Labs programme of HSE University.

Poletaev Institute researchers Irina Savelyeva, Boris Stepanov, Kirill Levinson, Olesya Kirchik, Alexander Dmitriev, Alexandra Kolesnik, and Daria Khlevnyuk presented at the 53rd Annual Conference of the Association of East European, Eurasian and Slavonic Studies (ASEEES), held in New Orleans (USA) in person on November 18-20 and online on December 1-3, 2021.

From 21 September to 1 October, the first conference of the Post-Socialist and Comparative Memory Studies Working Group ('PoSoCoMeS') of the Memory Studies Association

Daria Khlevnyuk, a postdoc fellow of the Institute and a co-founder of the PoSoCoMeS, took an active part in the conference's organization. The conference was attended by researchers of the Institute, Alisa Maksimova and Boris Stepanov.

A new paper on urban culture by Natalia Samutina and Boris Stepanov was published in journal "Urban History" (Vol. 45, Issue 1). The paper is titled "An eighteenth-century theme park: museum-reserve Tsaritsyno (Moscow) and the public culture of the post-Soviet metropolis" and discusses history of the Tsaritsyno Park in Moscow and museum-reserve. IGITI's Members at the ASEEES Conference

On November 17-20, 2016, Irina Savelieva, Alexander Dmitriev, Boris Stepanov, and Oksana Zaporozhets took part in the 2016 ASEEES Conference held in Washington D. C. On November 17, they organized and participated in the roundtable "Internationalization of Social Science and Humanities in the History of Russian Science." Additionally, Oksana Zaporozhets was a speaker at the roundtable "Digital Landskapes of Russian Cities: E-governance, Mobility, Activism."

Andrey Poletayev Memorial Readings

On September 9, 2016, VI Poletayev Memorial Readings entitled "Natual Sciences and Humanities: New Interaction (Dis)Order" were held at the Higher School of Economics. Among the participants were two guest speakers: Karl Hall from Central European University (Budapest) and Kornelius Borck from Lübeck University (Lübeck).

Natalia Samutina and Boris Stepanov participated in the international conference "Publishing differently. Small publishers, independent journalists and bloggers in Russia" at Paris-Sorbonne University (October 1–2, 2015). The purpose of the conference was to analyse these independent, critical channels of publication in present-day Russia. Who produces this different material? What civic and political alternatives do they represent? What conflicts and compromises exist between them and the dominant players? To answer these questions, presenters doscussed and analysed alternative publishing channels in Russia, in journalism, publishing or blogs. The aim was to analyse not only their break with the dominant patterns but also the compromises and hybrid situations that arise from their mutual relationship, as well as to examine the emergence of alternative publications since the final decades of the Soviet Union.

HSE Student Guided Tours Offer Unique Insight into Moscow

The Student Initiative Support Centre and the HSE Faculty of Humanities are jointly organising free guided tours around Moscow. The tours are designed by final year students. Most tours are in Russian but the organizers are ready to schedule additional English-language tours for international students.

On June 11–12, Natalia Samutina and Boris Stepanov participated in the international conference “Past the “Post-”: Theorizing the Post-Post-Soviet via (New) Media and Popular Culture” organized by the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA). Our new paper: "The Space of the City and Literary Imagination: the Legacy of Nikolai Antsiferov" by Boris Stepanov

The paper by Boris Stepanov "The Space of the City and Literary Imagination: the Legacy of Nikolai Antsiferov" has been published in the interdisciplinary journal "Enthymema". It is devoted to the discussion of the legacy of Nikolai Antsiferov (1889–1958), a Russian historian who suggested an original design of urban studies in which literature played the key role.
