Anastasia Smirnova

  • Anastasia Smirnova has been at HSE since 2017.

Responsibilities

Anastassia Smirnova is responsible for the development of the Advanced Urban Design curriculum, communication with the international team of tutors, and realization of collaborative projects with institutional partners. 

Short Bio

Anastassia Smirnova is a Rotterdam and Moscow based designer and researcher.

Scenographer by education, Anastassia has been part of many multidisciplinary projects and her competencies range from design and writing to educational and cultural programming.

In 2000-2007, she has been working as a freelance author for professional and popular press. Later on, she joined AMO, a think-tank within the Rem Koolhas’s Office for Metropolitan Architecture, to conduct the research for the Hermitage Museum Masterplan.

In 2007, she co-founded SVESMI, the first Dutch-Russian office for architecture and urbanism with an architect Alexander Sverdlov. The office is well-known both in Russia and in Europe for innovative research-based design projects: from large-scale museums to experimental residential and public buildings. It has won multiple awards for international competitions.

At SVESMI Anastassia leads preservation projects and is responsible for various educational, research and cultural activities of the office.

In 2010, Anastassia also became part of the educational team at the Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow, where she started teaching alongside Rem Koolhaas, Yuri Grigoryan (Meganom) and David Erixon (Hyper Island). With the latter she has been directing Institute’s education program in 2013-2015. In parallel to these activities, Anastassia has been teaching at the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture (the Netherlands) and serving as an invited critic at the TU Delft and Dramstadt University,

Since 2016, Anastassia Smirnova holds the position of an Academic Director of an international MA program Advanced Urban Design - a joint initiative of the Graduate School of Urbanism (HSE) and the Strelka Institute.

Anastassia is also a member of an advisory board of the Future Architecture, the first pan-European platform of architecture museums, festivals and schools.
