Research Interests

Empirical studies of the factors and main features of spatial development of Russia, including the 
formation of specializations of territories, industrial clusters, characteristics of the population, 
its ethnic and demographic composition, and the accumulation of human capital. The role of urban 
agglomerations (metropolitan areas) and the assessment of agglomeration effects. Processes of adjusting 
the functional and social structures of the city. Analysis of the location patterns of residents and 
enterprises in the city, including historical statistical studies, in particular on
St. Petersburg-Petrograd-Leningrad-St. Petersburg in the XIX - XXI centuries. Analysis and development 
of methods for territorial strategic planning.

He was the head of more than 70 research topics and consulting projects in the field of socio-economic reforms at the regional and local levels, state and municipal administration, regional economic policy. Participated (including as a leader) in a number of large international projects carried out by international consortia of consultants and experts commissioned by the EU, IBRD and other international organizations, as well as Russian ministries and regions.

2003-2004 - Doctoral studies at the Institute for Regional Economy Problems, Russian Academy of Sciences, defended his doctoral dissertation, awarded the academic degree of Doctor of Economics.

Cultural Events in Economic Reflection

From July 7 – 13, 2014, the Laboratory of Economics of Culture at the HSE in St. Petersburg held an International Summer School "Impacts of Cultural Events on Small and Medium-size Art-oriented Towns" (ICE – SMART). This was the first summer school organized as part of the master’s programme "Experience Economy: Hospitality and Tourism Management".

An Academic Approach to Cultural Tourism

The International Summer School, ‘Impacts of Cultural Events on Small and Medium-size Art-oriented Towns,’ has begun. Participants of the School include alumni of the Experience Economy: Hospitality and Tourism Management Master’s Programme, undergraduates and graduate students of HSE’s Moscow campus, as well as students, young lecturers and researchers from various universities in Poland, Slovenia, Kyrgyzstan, South Africa, and Japan.

The Space of Economics

‘Economics and Geography’ was the topic of the 12th Annual Conference of the series of Leontief Readings which took place from February 15-16, 2013, at the Leontief Centre with the support of the Saint Petersburg government. Theoreticians and empirical researchers looked for answers related to the spatial development of cities, regional inequality and transport.
