Research interests

  1. Social change, transformation of societies: comparative analysis;
  2. Clan capitalism in Russia and other countries;
  3. Shadow economy, organized crime, corruption (including that in law enforcement agencies);
  4. Methodology of social research
  5. Socioeconomic issues of post-Soviet military-industrial complex;
  6. Innovation and its economic and sociopolitical obstacles.

There were carried out interdisciplinary studies combining research in sociology, political science and economics. Over the period of twenty years it has been completed more than 60 large-scale research projects on model of capitalism in Russia, problems of criminal control, corruption and shadow economy, motivation of labor, labor-management relations, social factors of the post-Cold War restructuring of the Russian military-industrial complex, social machinery for innovation, social problems of transformation in the R&D sector, construction, agriculture, social services. Many of these studies were carried out in cooperation with European, Japanese and US scholars, and their results were published in English and in other languages.

Projects

Now there are three research projects under way:

  1. Comparative survey-based study of economic corruption of the law enforcement officers in a several transformation and developing countries (Russia, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan and Tanzania). This study is an extension of an earlier research done in Russia and funded by the Soros Foundation.
  2. Broad comparative analysis of the newly emerged Russian socioeconomic system entitled “Clan capitalism in Russia and its elements in other transition countries”.
  3. “Labor-management relations and business strategies at industrial enterprises: Comparing Russia and China” is being developed in cooperation with Japanese, Chinese and US scholars and based on longitudinal surveys of managers and blue collar workers in Russia and China.

Studies were resulted in near 170 publications, including academic papers, papers presented to policy-making bodies and articles in general press.

Incompatible Alternatives: HSE Researchers on the Ambivalence of Power in the Twenty-first Century Economy

Ambivalence and a combination of contradictory principles are vividly manifested in the actions of government, its individual agents and institutions, as well as the everyday practices of economic subjects and citizens. The participants of the HSE Laboratory for Studies in Economic Sociology seminar discussed the book The Ambivalence of Power in the Twenty-First Century Economy: Cases from Russia and Beyond, recently published in the UK. Prepared by researchers from HSE University and foreign universities, the book focuses on the study of ambivalence in Russia and beyond.

Discussing ‘The Chair’ in the Context of Contemporary University Problems

At the end of December 2021, the Laboratory for Studies in Economic Sociology (LSES) at HSE University held its traditional Christmas Cinema Seminar entitled ‘Where are universities going?’ Participants discussed ‘The Chair’, a TV series created by David Benioff and Daniel Brett Weiss, authors of ‘Game of Thrones’. 2021 marked the 20th anniversary of the Christmas seminar, which LSES has held to discuss hot-button issues after watching famous Russian and foreign films.

HSE University Researchers Investigate Why Many Russians Oppose Vaccination

Despite the risks associated with COVID-19 infection, many Russians either refuse to get vaccinated or are uncertain and hesitant about the practice. The factors behind these views are the subject of research by Yana Roshchina, Leading Research Fellow of the HSE University Centre for Longitudinal Studies and Senior Research Fellow of the Laboratory for Studies in Economic Sociology (LSES); Sergey Roshchin, Head of the Laboratory for Labour Market Studies (LLMS) and HSE University Vice Rector; and Ksenia Rozhkova, Junior Research Fellow at LLMS. The results of the study were presented at an LSES seminar.

Changing Europe Summer School: the Advantages of Interdisciplinary Approach

The 7th International ‘Changing Europe’ Summer School took place at the start of August in Moscow. The event was organized by the Higher School of Economics and the University of Bremen Research Centre for East European Studies.
