June 24, 1934 — March 11, 2019

On March 12, 2019, an outstanding scholar and dear friend Sergey Artemievich Aivazian left us. He was 84 years old.

Sergey Aivazian was born on June 24, 1934 in Moscow. He attended School No. 186 (class of 1952), where he graduated with distinction, and he earned his undergraduate degree in mechanics and mathematics from Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) in 1957. From 1957 to 1969, he worked as a Junior Research Fellow at the V.A. Steklov Mathematics Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1967, he earned his candidate of physics and mathematics sciences degree (equivalent to PhD) under the academic supervision of Yury Prokhorov. Sergey Aivazian was also a student of the Soviet mathematician, Andrey Kolmogorov.

In 1969, Mr. Aivazian established and led the Laboratory of Probabilistic and Stochastic Methods and Models in Economics at the Central Economics and Mathematics Institute (CEMI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Since 1985, he also served as CEMI Deputy Head.

In 1975, Mr. Aivazian earned his doctor of sciences degree (the equivalent to receiving tenure) in mathematical cybernetics. In 1976, he was appointed full professor.

In 2008, he was elected as an international member to Armenia’s National Academy of Sciences in the field of mathematics.

In 2017, Sergey Aivazian was awarded the L. V. Kantorovich Prize, which is awarded by the Economics Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences for outstanding work in economics and mathematical (quantitative) models and methods.

Mr. Aivazian served as the editor-in-chief of the Russian scientific journal, Applied Econometrics.

Mr. Aivazian’s research interests included theoretical and applied econometrics; multivariate statistical analysis; and probabilistic and stochastic modeling of the socio-economic processes (e.g. analysis and measurement of latent quality of life synthetic indicators, allocative relationships within society, and international and interregional econometric analysis).

He taught at various Russian universities, including the MSU Moscow School of Economics, the Moscow Financial-Industrial Academy, the New Economic School, and others.

For many years, Sergey Artemievich also taught at HSE University. He taught and mentored several generations of specialists of multivariate statistical analysis and econometrics. Students of Professor Aivazian remember his engaging lectures and approachability with pride and gratitude. HSE professors who worked alongside him remember his significant contribution to the field, his honourable character, unwavering optimism, and his support.

We love, remember, and mourn him.
