New Institute of Education Master’s Programmes Win Potanin Foundation Grant Competition

The HSE University Institute of Education (IOE) will launch new courses as part of its master’s programmes in the 2022/23 academic year. They are designed to provide competencies to those either currently working or planning to work in education. The plans have already gained financial support: the Vladimir Potanin Foundation ran a grant competition in which two HSE University Institute of Education entries won grants and another made the reserve list.

‘The Opening of the Full-time Advanced Doctoral Programme Was a Gift from Fate for Me’

In 2010, HSE University launched the Full-time Advanced Doctoral Programme, an innovative programme for doctoral students at that time. At the beginning of 2021, an alumna of the programme’s first cohort became the first programme graduate to earn her Doctor of Sciences degree: Elena Vakulenko, Assistant Professor at HSE University’s Faculty of Economic Sciences. In an interview with HSE News Service, the professor discussed her academic career.

Russian and Hungarian Innovation Researchers Exchange the Best Educational and Expertise Practices

1825 kilometers, different time zones and borders closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic did not stop the study of “Cultural patterns as a factor of successful digital transformation of Russian and Hungarian educational systems” (RFBR grant № 20-513-23002). The Laboratory for Educational Innovation Research (LEIR)  and researchers from the Hungarian Eötvös Loránd University have a zoom-meeting every 2 weeks to work on a research project. The teams conduct joint research and develop long-term partnership in expert and educational areas. At the end of 2020, Russian and Hungarian teams had an online meeting to exchange their best educational practices.

World Experts Discuss Education for Sustainability at CIES 2019

San Francisco, the U.S. has recently welcomed a superb cohort of international researchers, institutional leaders and policymakers to engage in multi-prism discussions on the role of education in the Global Sustainability Agenda as part of the 63rd annual Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) Conference. A team of 16 experts from IOE representing the Institute’s various R&D units and dimensions of expertise traveled to San Francisco this year to speak at CIES 2019.

Changes in Education Start with Grassroots Innovations

On June 5, the results of the semifinals in this year’s KIVO International Education Innovation Competition were announced. Held for the fifth straight year since 2014, KIVO is a joint project between IOE and the Rybakov Fund that aims to support grassroots innovations in learning & development. In 2018, an authoritative expert panel has shortlisted 28 best projects out of more than 500 applications filed. The finalists will first take part in an acceleration summer school to be held in Moscow later this June. The competition finals will get underway in the fall of 2018.

Changes in Education Start with Innovations ‘from Below’

On June 5th, the results of the Competition of Innovations in Education (KIVO–2018) were announced. The competition was organized by the HSE Institute of Education together with the Rybakov Fund. Out of 503 applications, the jury selected 28 projects. Their authors will take part in an innovation accelerator summer school, which will take in Moscow in late June. The competition finals will be held in autumn.

How International Tests Fail to Inform Policy: the Mystery of the Australian Case

Education experts Tatiana Khavenson and Martin Carnoy of IOE and Leila Morsy of the University of New South Wales (Australia) have analyzed Australia’s PISA and TIMSS data for a decade-and-a-half period through 2015 to test the validity of the most popular explanations that Australian education officials have voiced in recent years for the students’ steadily shrinking performance on PISA tests. The study results have been published in Elsevier’s International Journal of Educational Development.

Papers by IOE Experts Featured in Springer’s New Volume on Educational Reforms and Innovation

Several academic papers by leading experts at the HSE Institute of Education have been featured in Springer’s newly released volume Reforms and Innovation in Education, edited by Alexander M. Sidorkin and Mark K. Warford. The authors explore various factors and processes shaping the relationships between educational reforms, as driven by deep and progressive socioeconomic changes, their effects on innovations across the educational realm, and the implications for the quality of human capital.

IOE Researchers Speak at 2017 CIES Conference in Atlanta

On March 5–9, 2017, the U.S. city of Atlanta, Georgia hosted the 2017 Conference of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES). Seeking the most diverse engagement in the venue’s multiple opportunities for expertise exchange, debate, and academic networking, a representative team of experts with IOE’s leading research & advisory centres took part in this year’s CIES event. Presentations were given by Isak Froumin, Oleg Leshukov, Elena Minina, Pavel Sorokin, Zumrad Kataeva, Martin Carnoy, Tatiana Khavenson, and Andrey Zakharov.

9th International Conference on Social Science Methodology

On September 11-16 the 9th International Conference on Social Science Methodology was held in Leicester, UK. The event was organised by the International Sociological Associaton (ISA) Research Committee on Logic and Methodology (RC33). The conference takes place every four years and brings together over 500 researchers from Europe, North America and South East Asia. Staff members of the School of Sociology - Inna Devyatko, Aigul Mavletova, Olga Savinskaya and Tatiana Khavenson - took part in the event.

It’s More Useful to Compare Students from Different Regions of a Single Country than from Different Countries

Professor Martin Carnoy of Stanford University and visiting professor at the Higher School of Economics, and Tatiana Khavenson, Research Fellow at the HSE Institute of Education, were among the authors of the report ‘An Analysis of the Impact of Education Policies on Student Achievement in the United States’, which was recently presented in Washington, DC. The key provisions of this report are of use when it comes to analyzing the situation in Russian education.
