Breyfogle, Ekaterina Kalemeneva, Elena Kochetkova, Julia Lajus, David Moon and other authors. This collective monograph is one of the results of a networking project funded by the Leverhulme Trust (UK) carried out in 2013-2016, in which many researchers of the Laboratory participated. The project team carried out several research trips to different parts of Russia that are important for studying the history of the relationship between people and nature: the Solovetsky Islands, Lake Baikal, the Perm region and the Urals.

On August 21st, Saint Petersburg HSE Summer School, which has been taking place since 2017, came to a close. This year it moved online due to the pandemic. 44 participants from 18 countries, including France, Ireland, the USA, the Philippines, China, and others were joining Zoom during four weeks. The organisers of the Summer School were happy to welcome students of 15 HSE partner universities such as Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, King’s College London, Sciences Po Lyon, University of Basel, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, and others.

"Cold War matters: the invisible economics of things"
On December 16th and 17th, the Laboratory for Environmental and Technological History and the History Department hosted the symposium titled "Cold War Matters: (In)Visible Economies of Things." The goal of the symposium was to look at the Cold War from a different angle, one that differed from politics and military. Instead the focus of the symposium was to look at the Cold War through consumer culture, art, science, industry, and the exchange of these things across the permeable Iron Curtain.

The second day of the international symposium Cold War matters: The (In) Visible Economies of Things, organized by the Laboratory of Environmental and Technological History, ended with a lecture by Russian-American cultural historian and anthropologist Sergei Alexandrovich Ushakin. Currently, he is an employee of the Department of Slavic Languages and Literature at Princeton University. His professional interests include family and gender identity, the consequences of cultural trauma and the collective memory of the Soviet past.

HSE Researchers Receive Grants in Russian Science Foundation Competitions
The Russian Science Foundation announced the results of its 2019 competitions for support from the Presidential Research Project Programme. One competition was for grants in support of research initiatives by early career researchers, and another was in support of research conducted by research groups headed by early career scholars.

New Articles on behalf the Laboratory for Environmental and Technological History!
Environment and History, a leading journal in the field of environmental history has published an article co-authored by Viktor Pal, post-doc of the Laboratory, Elena Kochetkova, research fellow of the Laboratory, and other scholars. The article presents a program of action of recently established group of early career scholars of environmental history initiated by the European Society for Environmental History (Next Generation Action Team (NEXTGATe)). Viktor heads the group, and Elena is its member. The group aims at supporting scholars with emerging careers.

In July, an international network project involving the Centre for Historical Research Laboratory for Environmental and Technological History was granted the support of two international research funds.Julia Lajus, Head of the Laboratory, told HSE News Service what environmental and technology history is all about, and what role HSE researchers play in the Tensions of Europe international research network.
Elena Kochetkova has successfully defended her PhD in history
On May 27 Elena Kochetkova, senior lecturer of the department of history and research fellow of the Laboratory for Environmental and Techological History, Center for Historical Research has defended successfully her Phd thesis "The Soviet Forestry Industry in the 1950s and 1960s : A Project of Modernization and Technology Transfer from Finland". The defense took place at the faculty of social sciences of the University of Helsinki.
