Factors of Global Competitiveness of Russian Enterprises

Priority areas of development: economics
2014
The project has been carried out as part of the HSE Program of Fundamental Studies.

Goal of research: The main objective of the research was the further development of the methodology of empirical studies of institutional factors determining the improvement in global competitiveness of Russian industrial firms, based on the integrated data on both the survey results and on accounting data on the firms’ performance. The secondary goal was the research on the specific institutional factors which impact the development of Russian manufacturing enterprises (using different sources of information).

The major task for 2014 research was to develop the methodology and to conduct the third round of  monitoring survey (by face-to face interviews with top-managers) and to create an empirical database which includes both the survey results and the balance-sheet data.

Methodology: The methodology of the research includes the application of the sociology methods (in order to develop the survey instrument), methods of statistical analysis and econometric analysis, in particular methods, adequate for the specific data collected: cross-section and panel data analysis, combined analysis of the qualitative and quantitative indicators.

Empirical base of research: The research is based on different sources of empirical firm-level oinformation, including both publicly available databases and the original databases, such as the data for two previous rounds of monitoring of competitiveness conducted at IIMS, the results of the large-scale survey of European manufacturing firms (EFIGE database), SPARK-Interfax database, RUSLANA database, as well as the preliminary version of the 2014 survey of Russian manufacturing firms.

Results of research: The results include the development of the new survey instrument based on both the experience of the previous rounds of monitoring and on the experience of European EFIGE project. This has allowed the creation of the unique empirical database which provides the opportunities for measuring the institutional changes in Russian industry as well as to conduct comparative cross-country research. Another impor tant result was the development of the representative sample for manufacturing firms and the implementing the methodology to collect (jointly with GFK-Russia  marketing company) the survey data based on 2000 face-to-face interviews with top-managers of Russian industrial firms. The integrated database has been created including the balance-sheet data and the survey data. The quality of the information has been tested and was found adequate for the research purposes. Also, the results include the analysis of several particular factors for the enterprises performance, such as the globalization factors and international trade, the determinants for the choice of the model of management (centralized/decentralized), the analysis of the specific features of the behavior of firms with foreign participation in the capital in Russia, the research of the implementation of the systems of management of quality (ISO implementation) and its impact on the firms’ performance.
