The increasing interest of foreign partners in projects in these regions requires developing a single clear strategy for the development of Siberia and the Far East.
The research is aimed at filling in this gap and at assessing the opportunities of Siberia and Far East’s integration in Asia-Pacific’s economic processes. The integration of Siberia and the Russian Far East is analyzed in the context of Asia-Pacific’s economic and political processes. One of the major goals of the research is to identify promising ways of integration and opportunities that these regions can get. The main academic contribution of the research is the complex assessment of opportunities and constraints for the integration of Siberia and the Far East with Asia-Pacific region.
The subject of the research is the potential for integration of Siberia and the Russian Far East with Asia. Asian countries have shown remarkable growth rates in recent years and are one of the drivers of the world economy. Development and strengthening of Russian interests in the East is impossible without progress in Siberia and the Far East.
The aim of the project is the assessment of international cooperation’s possibilities for the Siberia and the Far East’s integration in the Asia-Pacific region’s economic processes.
The methodology of the project is based on a system approach and system theory. This kind of analysis takes into consideration both external and internal factors. International relations are described as a number of participants – actors and independent variables – factors. According to this approach, the aim of the project is to characterize the interactions between actors and factors of international relations that are connected with the development of Siberia and the Russian Far East. Due to the fact that the research is interdisciplinary, it combines the methods of both political and economic sciences. Among the key methods are the following: economic forecast, making scenarios, SWOT-analysis.
The information basis of the research is composed of different kinds of academic literature, statistic databases of international organizations (OECD, FAO, IMF, World Bank, etc.) as well as of interviews of Russian and foreign experts who specialize in Asia-Russian relations and in the issues of economic development of Siberia and the Russian Far East.
The results of the research in 2014 were presented in the form of reports at Russian and international conferences, and were reflected in the interim and resulting reports. Analytic reports, which formed the basis of the project in 2014, as well as the main conclusions of the study, were used in the preparation of teaching materials, lectures and seminars to several courses, taught at the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of the NRU HSE.
