"Minority" vs "Majority" in the Historical and Cultural Continuum of Asia and Africa

The project has been carried out as part of the HSE Program of Fundamental Studies.

Goal of research: Revealing of binary (multiplicity), which is characterized by the presence of a stable opposition on the majority-minority scale; Conceptualization of majority-minority phenomenology in various fields of social and humanitarian knowledge: history, anthropology, culture, economics and political science; Development of the methodological principles of majority-minority (minorities) interaction, research and revealing of the cultural and historical specificity of these interactions in the Afro-Asian historical and cultural continuum, followed by extraction of different phenomenologies, characterized by the presence of the essential feature - the dichotomy of the majority-minority.

Methodology:

The research methodology involves an interdisciplinary approach to the generalization and analysis of the material under investigation, as well as the use of cross-cultural method. At the same time, parts of the project are based on the classical methods of Asian Studies: source study and manuscriptology, comparative research methods of folklore, language  and sociological and ethnographic data, the method of content analysis; field research methods, applied by project participants in expeditions (Middle East (Iraq, Egypt); Central Asia; Far East (China, Tibet Autonomous Region), South-East Asia (Vietnam)).

Empirical base of research:

Empirical base of research covers a wide range of sources: the monuments of Asian manuscript heritage, original fiction and folklore texts in Asian languages; musical notations; intellectual products for children (school textbooks, children's books and games, comics, cartoons); media materials, graffiti.

Results of research:

  • Development of the basic principles of the concept of “Minority vs Majority” based on the various cases of majority-minority interaction in the countries of Asia and Africa;
  • The implementation of this research project serves for complement of the conception of majority-minority dichotomy in various spheres of social and political life of the Asian countries, the forms of interaction between these communities (groups) and mechanisms of external influence to prevent and resolve potential conflicts;
  • Information about the processes of socio-ethno-cultural divergence and convergence in the Asian and African communities, existing and possible opposition of identities, communities (groups) and social movements was collected and systematized.

Level of implementation, recommendations on implementation or outcomes of the implementation of the results

The project results are implemented in the development of courses for students of 1 and 2 year of study at "Asian and African Studies" program of St. Petersburg branch of the HSE.
