Cognitive aspects of human cognitive activity regulation

Priority areas of development: humanitarian
2015
The project has been carried out as part of the HSE Program of Fundamental Studies.

Goal of research: (1) investigation of the varieties and psychological methods of human cognitive activity regulation; (2) development and approbation of necessary experimental methods.

Methodology: The main research method was the factorial experiment. However, the quasi-experiment and questionnaire were also used as supplementary methods. The object of research were various kinds and mechanisms of human cognitive activity regulation, their deployment and use by the subject while performing cognitive tasks.

Results of research:The following new results were obtained within the project. The assumption was confirmed that human visual system uses primary statistical representations of visual ensembles (mean, dispersion, numerosity) to test hypotheses about statistical dependence or independence of multiple visible objects' features. The influence of perceptual noice on the comparative estimation of numerosity has been shown. In a visual search study it has been demonstrated that spontaneous extraction of words from large letter array is not enough for these words to guide visual search for letters. The data has been obtained showing that when naming objects belonging to a certain category using typical modifiers, the exemplars with a limited number of category features would be falsely recognized as already seen, whereas exemplars with perceptual noticeable features would be correctly rejected as already seen, The experimental data supporting the hypothesis about the conflict of representations as a psychological mechanism of insight have been obtained. The ENRuN database of normative estimates of emotional valency of Russian nouns has been collected. The database can be used to select words with necessary affective valence for a wide range of psychological and psycholinguistic studies of cognitive regulation mechanisms. It has been shown that the efficiency of creative activity is higher for individual performance than for work in dyads, with no significant difference in originality. The significance of research within the project is due to the improved theoretical framework describing regulation of human cognitive activity when performing a variety of tasks and processing various information, starting from perceptual properties of the visual field and finishing with emotional valency of Russian nouns.

Level of implementation,  recommendations on implementation or outcomes of the implementation of the results. The project was basically a research one and did not suppose direct implementation of its results.
