Moving of the material in history: the role of natural resource, materials and goods in institutional and infrastructural development

Priority areas of development: humanitarian
2016
The project has been carried out as part of the HSE Program of Fundamental Studies.

Goal of research

The aim of the study is the development and functioning of institutions and infrastructures through the analysis of the use of natural resources, circulation of goods, material things for the understanding of technological upgrades in the history of Russia and the USSR.

Methodology

The project used the basic methods of technological history, especially the history of infrastructure, technology transfer and circulation of knowledge and technologies. Research is focused on the studies of activities of different actors (state, institutions, individuals and small groups) on creation and development of infrastructures and movement of material objects. Infrastructures are considered part of large technological systems, combining different actors in the overall network and defining practices required for their regulation.

Empirical base of research

Empirical research base of research is formed on the basis of collection and analysis of both published and archival materials. It is traditional for historical research projects and includes both published materials (materials of newspapers and magazines, guidebooks, company reports, studies, engineering projects), and sources stored in the archives (correspondence, reports, records management of ministries and departments). All case-studies were based on original data. The analyzed cases were based on published and archival documentary materials collected in a number of archives and libraries situated in St.Petersburg and Moscow.  All case-studies were based on original data. Cases on the imperial period of Russian history have been studied on the basis of published and unpublished sources in archives (Russian State Archives of Ancient Acts (RGADA) and others) and library collections (National Library of Russia (RGB). In the framework of the Soviet period, research materials on history of the forestry industry, Soviet technopolitics in the Third world were collected mainly in the Russian State Archives of Economy (RGAE), and the St Petersburg Archive for Scientific and Technical documentation (SPbNTD).

Results of research

The key empirical results of the project are based on analysis of  data on the two key themes of the study: (a) the complex relationship between transport infrastructures, tourism, urbanization, industrialization, promotion and mobility in Russia and their impact on Russian space processes of change regions XVIII - XX century; (b) knowledge amd technology circulation in Russia in the  XVIII - XX centuries. On the basis of calls of technological development in different regions of Russia and the Soviet Union we emphasize the crucial importance of innovation technologies and volume of infrastructure investments for significant changes in social and economic practices. A high value of economic factors and public support for the success of technological exchange and import-export infrastructure projects was described. Results of the study significantly complement the existing, mostly political, history of technological modernization in Russia.

The results of the research were presented in papers at the international conferences and workshops and are in the process of publication in the international peer-reviewed journals.

Level of implementation,  recommendations on implementation or outcomes of the implementation of the results

The results can be used for further research in the field of social sciences and humanities, as well as in teaching to prepare lectures, practical classes and training materials.
