­­Cognitive strategies in perception, remembering, thinking and social cognition

The project has been carried out as part of the HSE Program of Fundamental Studies.

Goal of research: (1) investigation into the types and functional characteristics of human cognitive strategies used in various cognitive tasks; (2) development and approbation of experimental methods.

Methodology: The main research method was the factorial experiment. Quasi-experiment and questionnaire were also used as supplementary methods. The object of research: a variety of human cognitive strategies.

Empirical base of research: samples of human participants of different ages

Results of research: The following new results were obtained. New phenomena of strategic performance of various cognitive tasks were analyzed. The role of strategies relates to the spatial locations of objects in their categorization has been studied. Also, a number of new results in the study of human creative thinking has been obtained. The operation of strategies aimed at the overcoming of contradictions in the structure of the problem representation was demonstrated for the first time. Creativity in construction performance was studies, contribution of visual stimulation of creative activity on the visually presented object was analyzed. The interplay of visual search and scene memory was studied. The explicit and implicit information processing during visual search for letters in large letter arrays containing words has been studied for the first time. Perceptual organization under the conditions of unconscious priming induced by continuous suppression has been studied in detail. Finally, the relation between emotional features of the observer and strategies of emotional (and emotionally significant) information has been revealed. The significance of research within the project is due to the improved theoretical understanding of strategic aspects of a variety of cognitive tasks which require processing of various types of information, starting from perceptual properties of the visual field and finishing with emotional valency of photographic images of human faces.

Level of implementation,  recommendations on implementation or outcomes of the implementation of the results. This was basically a fundamental research project which did not imply direct implementation of its results.
