Russian panel study of trajectories in education and careers

The project has been carried out as part of the HSE Program of Fundamental Studies.

Goal of research: to analyze typical educational and career trajectories, cultural structures and factors influencing them.

Methodology:

Longitudinal data are collected with survey methods and in-depth interviews. Questionnaires are designed to fixate institutional aspects of respondents’ trajectories in spheres of education, career and family in dynamics. In-depth interviews are aimed at more detailed analysis of mechanisms of education and career choice, cultural structures and symbolic constructions which shape life trajectories.

Survey data are analyzed with longitudinal and causal analysis methods. Interview data are analyzed with interpretative methods and case-studies, by revealing typical elements and patterns which organize educational choices and trajectories.

Empirical base of research:

Empirical base of research is the panel study “Trajectories in Education and Careers” which contains one national panel and several regional panels. National panel started in 2011 and is based on the sample of 5 thousand 8th grade secondary school students, participants of TIMSS 2011. In 2016 the fifth wave of the study was conducted, 79% of the initial sample took part in the survey. Analysis is also based on more than 100 interviews with participants of national panel. Interviews took place in 2013 and 2015.

Results of research:

Development of methodology of longitudinal research

Methods aimed to prevent attrition are developed in the field of data collection and in the field of supporting interest and loyalty to the research. Interpretative methodology of analysis of educational and career trajectories with the help of culturally sensitive theoretical resources is being developed.

Theory development

The main problems and perspectives of conceptualization of the notion of trajectory in social sciences on education are analyzed. Theoretical analysis of culturally sensitive resources in sociology and anthropology of education is made to develop the field of contemporary empirical studies of education, with the main focus on development of interpretative models of educational and career choice.

New empirical knowledge

The data-base of the fifth wave of the national panel is prepared. Analytical materials on the results of the previous waves and maps of educational trajectories after the ninth and the eleventh grades are made. Factors influencing educational choices are analyzed. Based on the analysis of individual cases from in-depth interviews, studies of narratives of growing-up in their connection to educational choices and dynamic aspects of horizons of planning are conducted. It was shown how ideas about education are adapted and corrected after the first tracking.

Level of implementation,  recommendations on implementation or outcomes of the implementation of the results

Elaborations in longitudinal methodology and methods of preventing attrition may be applied in design of other similar studies.

Data-bases of national panel may be used by the scholars making applied and fundamental research in education, studying educational and career trajectories, choices and transitions from one level of education to another or from school to work.

Results of the data analysis may be used for preparation of analytical materials and recommendations for educational policy.
