Communicative Mechanisms of Repelling Verbal Aggression

Priority areas of development: humanitarian
Department: Laboratory of Linguistic Conflict Resolution Studies and Contemporary Communicative Practices

Goal of research

Using the methods of linguistic anthropology, semantics and pragmatics, we study the main strategies of verbal aggression used in various communication environments, primarily on the Internet, and analyze the mechanisms of protection against them.

The project uses a variety of research methods and techniques. First of all, we should mention the methods of semantic and discourse analysis, as well as the methods of pragmatics related to the theory of speech acts, Gricean maxims, Leech’s polieteness maxims, Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory, etc.. The project actively uses experimental methods, among which it is especially important to single out the corpus method, on which the study of language varieties, inaccessible to introspection, is based.

Empirical base of research

The main work is carried out with electronic resources that reflect the current state of Russian and other languages; such sources include linguistic corpora (including web corpora) and texts from various sources, primarily from social networks, as well as from literary sources. An important role in the study is played by the work with vocabulary. In addition, legislative documents are used.

Results of research

In this paper, we analyze in detail:

  • linguistic facts related to the discussion of the topic of money;

  • problems of political correctness and fears concerned with language;

  • new poetic genres that cause mixed reactions from native Russian speakers;

  • feminitives (designations of women by profession in Russian);

  • politeness formulae as a possible mitigator of communicative aggression;

  • problems of accentuation in Russian as a source of language conflict;

  • interaction with a computer in human language, potentially leading to linguistic conflicts;

  • borrowing as a source of metalanguage aggression;

  • jargons as a source of metalanguage aggression

The topics above illustrate what kind of phenomena can be sources of verbal aggression. The final report presents an analysis of individual cases: in particular, mechanisms for the escalation of verbal aggression around various phenomena are described and, conversely, mechanisms for reducing conflict.

Level of implementation, recommendations on implementation or outcomes of the implementation of the results

Research results can be used for various practical purposes, in particular when developing regulatory recommendations for Russian language teaching, as well as in preparing new school textbooks in Russian language, which will include not only spelling and punctuation, but also advice on correct usage and some information on general linguistics.
