Professor Andrey Karneev Has Passed Away

© HSE UNIVERSITY

On June 16, 2025, Prof. Andrey Karneev, Head of the School of Asian Studies at the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University, passed away suddenly.

A graduate of the Institute of Asian and African Studies at Lomonosov Moscow State University and a distinguished sinologist, he devoted his life to the study of China, to educating students, and to academic inquiry. Prof. Karneev spent most of his professional life at his alma mater, the Institute of Asian and African Studies, and since 2019 had headed the School of Asian Studies at HSE University. Under his leadership, the school saw a dramatic increase in student enrolment and launched new language programmes, academic initiatives, and partnerships.

Prof. Karneev’s academic interests lay primarily in modern Chinese history and political life. In recent years, he focused on the specifics of Russian–Chinese relations and the socio-political development of contemporary China. A brilliant scholar with an encyclopaedic knowledge of Chinese history, he was also a gifted lecturer and storyteller whose courses were consistently popular among students. He mentored several generations of professional Asian studies scholars and was a shining example of dedication to scholarship and academic service.

Prof. Karneev was known for his remarkable intellect, kindness, subtle humour, and rare ability to explain even the most complex sinological topics clearly and accessibly. He was always generous with kind words and encouragement.

True professionals are few and far between; truly good and honourable people among them are even rarer. We have lost one such person. HSE University and the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs mourn together with Prof. Karneev’s family, students, and colleagues. His passing is a significant loss for the entire academic community.

Those who would like to share their memories of Prof. Karneev or leave a message for his family can do so here. The Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs will compile a book of remembrance and pass it on to his family.
