Mikhail Chagin, second-year student of the Bachelor’s in Information and Communication Technologies and Systems at HSE MIEM, has taken first place in the BRICS Marathon League 2025. He won in the Amateur category for his age group (18–19) and completed two marathons: in Moscow (42.2 km in 03:13:02) and Kazan (42.2 km in 03:17:41). Mikhael spoke with HSE University Life about his impressions of the events and his plans for the upcoming sporting season.
The BRICS Marathon League unites the biggest marathons in Russia (Moscow, St Petersburg, and Kazan). In the near future, it will expand to include marathons in Brazil, India, China, South Africa, and other BRICS countries. The competitions are notable for their exceptional organisation and athleticism, focus on the development of athletics, and emphasis on cultural and tourism exchange. The creation of the league was approved by the Russian Ministry of Sports.

I was at home when I found out about my result and my first reaction was, of course, joy. I had been waiting for this victory. But I know that I can’t stop now—I have to move forward onto new achievements and try to win this kind of accolade at the international level.
The most memorable race of this season for me was the Kazan Marathon. It was my first time in Kazan and my first BRICS League race, so I was a little nervous. I had an incredible amount of support from the HSE Running Club led by Rector Nikita Anisimov. The members of the club always cheer for each other, and when you hear ‘Come on, HSE!’ during a race, you want to run faster and faster.
Sport has been a part of my life since I was a child, and I am used to combining study with training. I have to study harder and go running whenever I can. Our club has a unique atmosphere. Students like me run and compete alongside lecturers. My groupmates know about my commitment and support me.
In 2025, I ran two of the three BRICS League marathons, so one of my goals for next year is to take part in the other one—the White Nights marathon in St Petersburg. In the longer term, my dream is to take part in international events, such as a World Marathon Majors race.
