A minor is a set of four five-credit courses that students study in their second and third years outside their main curriculum.
Most minors are geared towards professional skill-based microqualifications. Students who successfully complete them are awarded a microqualification certificate and a professional training diploma issued by HSE University alongside their diploma of higher education.
This academic year, HSE’s departments are offering 100 minors—21 of which are new. The corresponding microqualifications span five main fields: business; information technology; soft skills; innovation, education, and science; and life science. The largest group of minors is those related to IT qualifications.
You can view the list of minors (availability provided that they do not clash with your main degree programme) and apply for those you are interested in via the SmartWay course selection system from March 19.
In your application, you can list five minors in order of preference. Allocation of students to minors employs an algorithm based on a student’s percentile.
A student’s percentile represents the percentage of students who rank higher than them in their programme of study. This means that the smaller your percentile, the better your performance and the higher your position in the rankings.
In preview mode, you can view the list of available minors, details of their implementation, the courses studied within them, and the microqualifications you will earn from them.
You must select five minors in order of preference and submit your application. You can change your selection and their order any time before the end of this round by cancelling and resubmitting your application. The speed of your application submission has no effect on the outcome.
Selection strategies differ depending on the level of competition for places on popular minors. Please consider your own strategy based on your percentile and the available information about the most popular minors from last year.
When the first round has concluded, students will be assigned to one of the five minors specified in their application. The allocation process takes into account the student’s ranking as described above.
If you are not assigned a minor during the first round or did not participate in the selection process, you can apply to join remaining minors with free places.
Students who do not take part in the campaign or whose applications are not accepted will be randomly assigned to minors with free places.
