Running with HSE University

2026 Season Begins

The first meeting of the Running Club and the HSE Student Running Club for the 2026 season was held at HSE University. During the meeting, students and staff discussed the competition schedule for the upcoming season, which spans from April to October. They also focused on the challenges of balancing sports with studying and working, as well as key principles of training such as load balance, recovery, and internal discipline.

The meeting participants identified a list of the most significant events of the upcoming season. It included the Moscow and Kazan Marathons, the White Nights in St. Petersburg, and races in Perm and Nizhny Novgorod. According to Anna Kozyreva, leader and co-founder of the Running Club, in 2026 the university’s running community plans to expand the geography of its participation in these events together with other HSE University campuses. There is already a tradition of joint events with HSE University in St. Petersburg during the White Nights race.

Special attention was paid to mindfulness in the training process. Sergey Babaev, coach of the track-and-field section, and Andrey Spassky, Doctor of Medical Sciences, emphasised that the effective training is impossible without considering health status, recovery regime, and load balance. Continuing the topic, marathon runner Marat Shamyunov defined discipline as a set of rules, rituals, the ability to follow a plan, and listening to oneself—including attention to sleep, nutrition, and regular self-reflection. ‘Every training session is building material for a new height. But the main thing is joy: if you come back from training happy, discipline becomes part of your culture,’ he added.

The runners shared their practical experience of overcoming burnout amid a busy schedule. Arina Krivenko, Manager of the HSE Sports Community Development Centre, a fourth-year student at the Faculty of Economic Sciences and a marathon runner, noted the value of regularity even in the absence of an ideal result: ‘It is better to do something poorly than to strive for the ideal and end up doing nothing. Even small and imperfect steps lead to great results.’

Summing up the meeting, Inna Valikova, Manager of the HSE Student Running Club, noted that the community is growing and developing. ‘All the participants learned something new thanks to the speakers, met with old friends, or simply got to know HSE University’s world of running. The 2026 season promises to be interesting. Let’s run with HSE University!’ she said.

The first major event of the season was the 5 km race on April 5, 2026, which took place in Moscow. Dozens of HSE University students updated their personal records during this event. The students participating in the third stage of the Student Running Community Cup were the first to start. No prizes were awarded yet, but two more stages are still ahead. The HSE University support point was noted by the organisers as one of the most active and loudest.

Active runners of HSE University who participate in at least three major races on the club’s calendar can receive uniforms designed by runners for runners. The 2026 season promises to be as active as the last one, and a comfortable uniform is an essential component for personal success.

New events are ahead, and the running community invites HSE University students to join both as participants and supporters. All detailed information is available on the website (in Russ
