Summer Field Practice at Ruza

HSE students study hydrobiology and plant science at the university complex

© HSE UNIVERSITY

For the second year in a row, the HSE Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology has conducted field practice for students at the Ruza complex on the shore of the Ruza Reservoir. In 2026, the event took place on July 7–16. First-year students of the Bachelor's in Cell and Molecular Biotechnology have acquired skills in freshwater hydrobiology and botany.

Starting this year, the duration of the internship has been increased to two weeks. Students study key groups of aquatic and terrestrial organisms, learn to identify about a hundred species of invertebrates and more than 30 families of flowering plants, and undertake self-study of plant biology. The botanical studies culminate in an excursion, which each student conducts for the teachers.

Students and teachers note that the conditions at Ruza create an optimal environment for research and gaining valuable educational and team experience.

— Field practice is part of a biologist’s training, and it’s crucial for us that it takes place in the most comfortable and safe conditions. The Ruza complex gives us exactly what we need: a modern residential building, equipped places for working with samples, and spacious outdoor areas for discussing the results. Students can fully concentrate on their research without being distracted by everyday issues. The convenient logistics, high-quality food, and attentive staff all make Ruza a perfect platform for summer practice. We are glad that we have this site, and we plan to continue cooperation with the complex in the future.
