Adidas Bomber Jacket Patch Design Competition Now Open at HSE

HSE students are invited to participate in a design competition in which a series of three illustrations will be selected. Submissions will be accepted until May 22. The winning patch projects will be set in the form of stripes on adidas bomber jackets. The author of the best work will travel to the head office of adidas in Germany.

How to Participate in the Competition

The competition is open to all HSE students, regardless of faculty and training.

To participate in the competition, you must submit an online application and attach your three illustrations (in PDF format) with a brief description of the project.

Submissions will be accepted from April 22 to May 22.

Illustration Requirements

Illustration submissions should first and foremost reflect the essence of the HSE brand and its related associations—e.g., modernity, youth, openness, self-realization, the HSE crow, and so on. A full list of overarching and related ideas connected with the HSE brand can be found here. Submitted illustrations should not only reflect the HSE brand but also be stylistically linked to each other.

This is not about creating a new logo or set of symbols of the university—illustrations can take them into account, but not replace them. In addition, applicants should abide by some technical requirements: since the illustrations will be used to create patches, they must be suitable for placement in a circle (with a diameter from 76 to 90 mm) and be able to be applied to felt or cloth without becoming distorted.

Why Bomber Jackets?

‘Historically, the bomber jacket is a symbol of student fraternity and a way of showing that you belong to a sports team of an elite educational institution,’ explains adidas CIS brand director Rachel Howard. ‘The bomber jacket is an excellent representation of the relationship between sports and student life. The idea of turning the clothing item into a creative space for art is a logical start to the partnership between the adidas brand and the Higher School of Economics.’

How Winners Will be Selected

The initial review of applications and selection of finalists will be conducted by an expert jury consisting of employees of HSE and the adidas company. The final list of winners will be determined by a university-wide student vote.

Following the results of the competition, the series of winning patches will be presented in an adidas store and then be sold in a limited number at select adidas retail stores.

What You Win

The authors of the 15 finalist illustrations selected by the jury will receive adidas merchandise.

The top three finalists (which will be determined by the student vote) will receive adidas merchandise and be the first to receive bomber jackets featuring the patches that they designed.

The winner who receives the most points from the jury and the most votes in the HSE student vote will win the Grand Prix and receive a trip to the adidas head office in Herzogenaurach (Germany).

Detailed information about the competition rules, the technical requirements for the illustrations, and the criteria by which the jury will evaluate submissions are available here.
