Seminars on Football Economics Start at the HSE

A new weekly seminar, ‘Football Economics’, headed by Konstantin Sonin and Dmitry Dagaev, is starting at the HSE. The first session will take place on January 28, 2014. The seminar aims to look at how the professional football industry works.

According to Deloitte, the volume of the football market just in Europe alone in 2012 was 19.4 billion Euros (which is 11% higher than in the previous year). Such a rapid growth generates demand for a professional economic analysis of the industry, which is necessary for effective decision making among football agents, club owners, federations, insurance companies and other economic actors. This topic is also now attracting academic research. The seminar will introduce these studies to the audience. Each session will consider a research paper on a certain area of sports economics, which will be presented by one of the seminar participants.

Heads of the seminar: Konstantin Sonin and Dmitry Dagaev. Their recent publications include Winning by Losing: Incentive Incompatibility in Multiple Qualifiers about how the rules of sports competitions influence the behaviour of the contestants.

Working language: Russian

Schedule: Tuesdays, starting from Jan 28, 5 pm.

Address: 26 Shabolovka Ulitsa, Room 3209

If you need a pass to the HSE or have any questions about the seminar, please contact Dmitry Dagaev via email at ddagaev@hse.ru.
